The pandemic has imparted some important life lessons and reminded us to count our blessings, according to Suzie Razmus. Most notably, she added, “It’s highlighted how important people are to one another.”

The COVID-19 crisis also has underscored the importance of having access to quality health care, and the mayor of Corbin proudly points to Baptist Health as an example. In particular, she conveyed gratitude for Baptist Health Corbin President Anthony Powers: “He has led our hospital and our community so well in these unprecedented times.”

Suzie says gratitude is a powerful force and the cornerstone of our health, and she spots it often in people “who are willing to make sacrifices for someone or something outside of themselves.” She is most grateful for “grace and mercy” and believes “God rewards those who are grateful to him and who express that gratitude by treating others as God has commanded.”

Thank you, Mayor Razmus, for sharing your insights with Project Gratitude. We are truly grateful. Read more inspiring stories or share what you’re grateful for at .

While families were largely confined to their homes at the outset of the pandemic, one of the things Shannon Leigh Holt, MD, missed most was Sunday night dinners at her mom’s house. “We couldn’t gather in person, so my mom started cooking dinner and handing it out in the driveway,” she said. “While we couldn’t gather in person, we gathered in spirit.”

Dr. Holt, a Baptist Health OBGYN, is most grateful for time spent with family and friends, something she appreciates now more than ever. “In the beginning of the shutdown, we experienced time as a family we hadn’t had in years: We sat down at the table for dinner together. We played some new games. We drove each other crazy, but I treasure the time with my children the most.”

As a physician, she’s also thankful for the community’s love and support for health care workers, which she described as “a spark of joy in the middle of difficult times.”

Thank you, Dr. Holt, for sharing your insights with Project Gratitude! We are truly grateful. Read more inspiring stories or share what you’re grateful for at .

Throughout the month of November, Baptist Health Corbin employees have participated in an annual employee giving campaign and pledged more than $60,000 to support our colleagues, patients, and community!

On this we invite you to consider pledging your support as well. Your thoughtful contribution can support Baptist Health Corbin’s patients, employees and also provide advanced technology and equipment; specialized training for our physicians, nurses and staff; as well as new, improved facilities. The impact of your contribution allows us to offer innovative therapies, programs and support groups, community health screenings, and extra services that make a patient’s hospital experience more comfortable.

Before the pandemic, the role gratitude played in healthcare was remarkable. Today, it’s even more pronounced. Throughout the crisis, courage and kindness have overcome fear. Doctors, nurses and front-line care providers do what they always do — answer the call. The families of Baptist Health’s staff and our communities also have rallied, donating critical supplies and emergency funds despite their own financial hardships. Through it all, gratitude has driven us, gratitude has shaped us and gratitude has connected us.

Dayla Saylor Combs, RN, may have once been named “most bashful” by her high school senior class, but she is also a very caring person who passionately believes in the important role of gratitude and that we are all in this together. She explains, “I have had the privilege of seeing gratitude from different perspectives through this crisis. I see the healthcare workers potentially risking their lives to help save others and, at the same time, I seen a community that recognizes how important the local hospital is during a crisis.”

As COVID-19 continues to impact our region, we are committed to keeping our heroes – our doctors, nurses and team members – safe. As you know, the broader health care community is at risk of running low on critical personal protective equipment (PPE). Health care workers need these essential safety items on the frontline of this pandemic to effectively provide care. We are currently accepting the following items:

1. Masks – Both N95 and procedural masks will be accepted. These masks can be found across many industries and have been deemed appropriate to use in the health care setting by the CDC
2. Hand sanitizer – Personal sized hand sanitizer that has been unopened. CDC guidelines encourage sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol composition
3. Eye protection – This includes any new or unused goggles, safety glasses or face shields
4. Disinfectant wipes – All brands of unopened premoistened wipes are accepted
