We would like to take a moment and recognize our Foster Parents of the Quarter, Arnold and Patricia Coots! The Coots family have been with us for a year and a half, and in their time with BFS they have went above and beyond to provide a stable and loving home to youth placed in their care. The Coots can always be counted on to ensure the youth placed with them receive excellent care and consideration. Arnold and Patricia do not hesitate to extend their home and their hearts to children in need of a safe and supportive family, and have proven to be such a valuable asset to our BFS family!

There’s something utterly amazing about the first time you welcome a child into your home. From the memories you make together to the way you help them overcome the trauma they’ve experienced, the path ahead of you is going to be full of twists, turns, and lots of surprises. Keep on pushing, even when it seems challenging, because the more love you show a child the more they realize that there’s still good in the world.
We’re always happy to answer questions when you’re meeting with one of our employees. We’ve also put together a handy informational video designed to answer many of the things you may be wondering about foster care.

We have virtual training sessions planned out for quite a few months down the road. Topics such as managing ADHD, what it’s like in your first 30 days of placement, how to deal with bullying and more are right around the corner. Visit our website to get the latest dates and times of our webinars.
When many of our foster children come to our agency, they’ve experienced things that many of us never may have imagined were possible. They need parents like you to help them turn things around, to comfort them when they’re feeling sad, and to not get upset when they get a little bit of mud or dirt on that coat you just bought them. It’s in those types of moments that you can make a true difference by showing them grace even in the midst of mistakes.
Foster families are made up of all ages, races, creeds, and backgrounds. As long as you’re old enough and have the proper space for them, you’re already well on your way to becoming a foster parent. We welcome you to apply and learn more about how you can become a part of our growing family!
Meet the team behind Benchmark Family Services! Julie Carter is the Director of Strategy and Development for our Indiana office.
Foster parents are often the reason a child learns to turn tragedy into joy, sadness into happiness, and discouragement into optimism. When you see this happen with your own eyes
for the first time…well, trust us: there’s no greater reward than that particular moment. It’s then that you’ll realize you’ve made an everlasting difference in them.
You’re interested in becoming a foster parent? We can’t wait to meet you! Your first step will be to contact our agency to set up orientation. This serves to inform you about our agency and answer any questions you may have regarding the certification process and foster care. This orientation does not lock you in to fostering through our agency.
The past few years have brought challenges to all of us. Why not make 2022 a year to remember in a way you never considered before: by becoming a foster parent. Here are 3 reasons to consider fostering this year:
- Foster parents are needed across both Indiana and Kentucky. There are more kids than homes to place them in.
- Children of all ages need safe homes. This includes both newborns as well as older teenagers about to age out of the system.
- Fostering brings with it opportunities you may never have considered, specifically to be a lifelong influence on a person’s life.
Being a foster parent isn’t always easy. We’re here to help! Just call or contact us through our website and someone will get back with you.
Our prospective foster parents will need to complete First Aid, CPR, and Bloodborne Pathogen training. If you are currently certified in any of these areas, you can submit copies of your certification card to BFS staff.
When you were growing up, did you ever break something of your parents? Maybe it was a special vase or a family heirloom.
In any case, while you may have felt bad, your parents still loved you unconditionally. Sadly, many of our foster children have never experienced that. They live in fear, afraid of making the tiniest mistake.
Show them true love, even when they get it wrong. That’s the mark of a true foster parent!
No matter how old or young you might be, whether you have kids at home or they’re grown, anyone can be a foster parent. Contact us if you have any questions about the process or how long it takes from the first application until you are welcoming a child into your home for the very first time.

Across the United States, kids who lack a stable social structure are far less likely to graduate high school than those who have one. By becoming a foster parent, you’re providing them with the tools they’ll need to start adulthood off on the right foot.

A frequent question we receive has to do with the foster child’s medical care. Many families wonder how this is covered. Each child in the foster care system is provided with a medical card that covers any medical care they need while staying with you.
Remembering those we’ve lost this Memorial Day with love and gratefulness for their service. Of course, today also marks the unofficial start of summer. Whether you’re one of our foster families or simply a supporter, we want to wish you lots of fun memories and experiences this year!
This is one of those quotes we’ve all heard, yet is perhaps more applicable to foster care than any other industry. Change starts with each one of us being willing to do what we need to so that kids across Kentucky and Indiana are able to find homes to take them in, to nurture them, and to help spark true, genuine change in their impressionable lives.
Technology has allowed us to integrate virtual training into the process of becoming a foster parent. Both continuing education and new foster parents can get started with our list of upcoming classes. Plus, since they’re virtual, you can do them all from the comfort of your own home!
From training lists to resources for your home to important numbers, we’ve got you covered. For both Indiana and Kentucky foster parents, below you’ll find a robust list of resources and things to help you as you foster children across our two states.
We’d love to schedule a time to connect with you and answer any questions you may have about foster care. Contact us at this link or give us a call and someone will be with you as soon as possible!
The process of becoming a foster parent includes both employment and medical checks. We require these for each employed parent within the home as well as medical clearance for all household residents. This helps to ensure that any child placed in the home will receive the attention and care they need.
