WANTED - Workplace Hosts for our Summer 2022 STEM Teacher Externships Program
The USarmy Corpsofengineers Rock Island has been a valued Teacher Externship partner since 2013.
WORKPLACE HOST EXPERIENCE
Since 2013, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Rock Island District has hosted numerous STEM Externs, most of which have been assigned to the Natural Resources Section of our Mississippi River Project Office. The STEM Extern program has been both rewarding and mutually beneficial.
The program offers the flexibility for our managers to assign externs to projects where their help will be most advantageous to our natural resources staff. Because many of our field efforts are affected by weather, river conditions, etc., the ability to adjust on a daily basis is crucial. The flexibility of the extern program allows the teachers to support fieldwork on multiple projects and adjust to the daily needs of our crews.
The teachers are exposed to a wide array of practices, concepts, equipment, and field techniques in natural resource management. Teachers have participated in numerous vegetation sampling efforts and wildlife monitoring efforts, as well as interacting with other professionals in the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. The structure of the STEM Extern program allows for field support to USACE on multiple projects while providing a wide variety of experiences for the teachers, and equipping them with material to incorporate into their classroom.
Richard T. Nickel, P.E.
Chief, Project Engineering Section
US Army Corps of Engineers
