Welcome to the 300th issue of Little Village magazine! The 2021 Give Guide highlights dozens of local nonprofit organizations that deserve your dollars this winter, as well as retailers and artists selling gift-worthy goods right here in eastern Iowa (who needs a global supply chain?).

Featured orgs include the Great Plains Action Society, uniting Indigenous Midwesterners to seek justice for decades of genocide via residential schools, police brutality, environmental violence and more; the Friends of Hickory Hill Park, who led the campaign to develop the beloved natural space in a way that benefits the city, its residents and wildlife; and the Immigrant Entrepreneurs Summit, helping new American citizens become new American business owners.

Plus: Waterloo’s 1619 Freedom School, Iowan-owned Etsy shops, and profiles of local book publishers and record labels.

Also inside: Andre’ Wright presents the Black Liberation Space, including four pages of art designed by young Black creatives.

Visit littlevillagemag.com/give during our November-December donation drive to learn more about the local nonprofits and retailers in this year’s Give Guide and how you can help support them.

The SPLATS were bigger than ever and so was the FUN at last Saturday's Jack Splat! 🎃💥

Thank you to everyone who joined us for one final hurrah of the Halloween season! From a tiny gourd named "Baby" to a show-stopping 103 pound pumpkin, this year's carved creations made for some excellent SPLATS!

A very special thanks to everyone who made this event possible:
🎃 New Pioneer Co-op for providing treats
💥 Public Space One for the use of audio equipment
🎃 The City of Iowa City Government and the Iowa City Parks and Recreation Department for making our high-flying outdoor event a reality
💥 The Iowa City Landfill & Recycling for taking care of six 95-gallon bins filled with pure pumpkin compost!

11/06/2021

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Jack SPLAT this morning! 🎃💥 We had so much fun watching your pumpkins fly through the air and land with a SPLAT!

11/04/2021

It's almost time for some high-flying fun! Jack SPLAT! is this Saturday at 10 a.m. in Chauncey Swan Park. In addition to the BIGGEST SPLATS we've ever had, grab some treats from New Pioneer Co-op, build with our blue blocks, and laugh along with Pete the Turtle's jokes and songs.

Pumpkin Drop-Off: To join the fun, drop off your pumpkins at our front desk today or tomorrow during our opening hours (10 am – 6 pm). You can also bring your carved creations straight to the big event at Chauncey Swan Park on Saturday morning. Please plan to drop off your pumpkin before the event starts at 10 a.m.

We will be composting the pumpkins guts, so please remove candles, artificial lighting, or any other decorations that are in or attached to the pumpkin. This includes stickers, ribbons, and remnants of candle wax inside. Please leave pumpkins with paint or glitter at home.

The Community Foundation of Johnson County has been involved in many facets of The ICM's mission over the years, bringing play to countless individuals throughout our community.

For years, CFJC has supported our accessibility programs, including ICM for Everyone, to ensure ALL children can reap the benefits of hands-on play. Their support has also helped bring unique projects to life, including musical events in our exhibits, public art installations, and various Not a Box parties out in the community. Most recently, support from the Coralville Community Fund also enabled The ICM to host six weeks of outdoor programming in the summer of 2021, bringing educational play to more than 1,300 individuals.

Thank you to the Community Foundation of Johnson County for helping us inspire a new generation of learners and for being a partner in play!

Thanks to a recent donation from Pampers, we have new Koala Kare changing tables in all of our public restrooms. We're grateful for this donation so all parents who come play are better equipped to take care of their babies!

The Power of Play

A child’s ability to learn is founded in play.

Every day new discoveries are being made in the science of brain development that provide concrete evidence that play is how children learn about the world. For a child, play is the vehicle for exploring and learning, developing new skills, and connecting with others.

Play is how children develop skills related to critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. Often referred to as 21st century skills, these abilities are essential to succeed in our global world with complex challenges for our children to face that will certainly require flexible thinking and creative problem solving.

At The Iowa Children’s Museum, we strive to provide a rich active learning environment that fuels children’s natural curiosity and creativity. The Museum is an engaging, multi-sensory, interactive, child-centered environment offering families unique opportunities for playfulness.
