Due to winter weather, Horizons and Elder Services offices will be closed today. NTS (Neighborhood Transportation Service) will not run routes in the daytime, with a determination to be made later regarding nighttime service.
Earlier this week, Elder Services requested assistance getting some emergency meals to a senior living community without power. Thanks to Pullman Bar & Diner, a stand-out in our amazing local restaurant community, T2T delivered 25 HOT meals within a couple hours of the request. This was made possible by the network established through the COVID-response Food With Love Project Community Foundation of Johnson County.
Last night, the city council awarded $123,600 in funding to Shelter House - Iowa City, CommUnity Crisis Services and Food Bank, Iowa City Free Medical & Dental Clinic, North Liberty Community Pantry, United Action for Youth, Domestic Violence Intervention Program, North Liberty Family Resource Center, Housing Trust Fund of Johnson County, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Johnson County, RVAP, Any Given Child IC, Friends of the Iowa City Senior Center, Houses into Homes, Girls on the Run of Eastern Iowa and Elder Services for service to North Liberty residents.

One final thanks to all of our volunteers that contributed to providing #HelpAndHope to The Corridor this year at special events like the Survivors Benefit, Turkey Trot, Home For The Holidays, Holiday of Hope, and our Winter Lunch Box! Without the volunteers at Horizons and Elder Services, our mission would be much more difficult. We are grateful for your participation and look forward to being #BetterTogether in 2020!
Announcing the merger of Elder Services Inc and Horizons, A Family Service Alliance. Together, we'll continue to provide help and hope to the Corridor.
With my meals, there was a bag of gifts! I am so surprised and thankful for these thoughtful and useful items. Please give my thanks to everyone involved.

The Keller Williams Realty group calls it Red Day. This year it was on May 13, 2021. This group of realtors cleaned up yards (some still had debris from the derecho), trimmed bushes and trees, cleaned porches and flowerbeds for several of our Meals on Wheels clients in Johnson County.

Here's what one client had to say, "Elder Services, thank you for setting us up with the Keller Williams Realty Group. There were many who came and cheerfully worked. They took several things off my worry list! They were awesome!" --Thankfully, Joyce and Frank

Thank you Keller Williams! #BetterTogether

How to Combat Loneliness in Older Adults During COVID-19

We are reaching out to clients each week by phone in addition to meal deliveries. Sometimes, we are able to help them obtain personal care and household cleaning items, sometimes we support them with extra shelf stable meals, and sometimes it’s just an opportunity to chat.

Have you checked in with an older adult you love lately?

“Cases of COVID-19 are on the rise again and it's important that everyone does their part by following CDC recommendations for social distancing and wearing masks in public. See this update from the City of Iowa City. If you are a local senior citizen in need of a free face mask please contact us to request one at 319-356-5220.”

Cases of COVID-19 are higher than ever in Johnson County. Yes, the number of people being tested is higher, and so is the number of individuals who are testing negative. Still, be safe: wear a mask/face covering when out, stay home if you're sick, wash your hands, maintain social distancing. #StayHomeIC https://www.icgov.org/Coronavirus

Meals on Wheels America

Well before the COVID-19 pandemic became a national emergency, millions of older Americans were already struggling with hunger. Ensuring they have access to adequate nutrition is now more important than ever.

05/01/2020

Happy May Day and Older Americans Month!
Here are a few tips to help you stay connected with the seniors in your life: 1) Become their pen pal. 2) Teach them something new like getting on a Zoom meeting or playing a virtual game of Monopoly. Involve others in your family! 3) Spend time in person if the situation permits.4) Most importantly, let your seniors know they’re thought of and make sure they have everything they need during this time of crisis. #BetterTogether #olderamericans #reduceisolation

General information

Elder Services was founded in July 1980 as Elderly Services Agency to serve people 60 and over in Johnson County. Its original mission was to help older people remain safely in their homes as long as possible by coordinating and delivering paid and volunteer services. ESA started with a director, a half-time chore worker and a receptionist all housed in offices at the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center. In spring 2000, ESA began the process of dealing with the need for physical space due to program and staff growth, enhancing community awareness of the agency and its services, and examining and modernizing its infrastructure and program design. The agency has since relocated twice, with its current offices at 1556 S 1st Avenue in Iowa City and officially changed its name to Elder Services, Inc.
