Thursday, February 11, 5:30 pm - “Authenticity and Polychromy on Ancient Roman Sculpture” lecture by Mark Abbe, University of Georgia.

Hosted by the University of Iowa's School of Art and Art History and the Iowa Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, this lecture is free and open to the public via Zoom. Please register in advance here: http://ow.ly/G65e50DjBJO

Questions of authenticity often surround artworks that are alleged to be ‘ancient’ but lack a securely excavated context. Even with prolonged study it is not always possible to determine whether unprovenienced marble sculptures carved in well-known Greek and Roman styles that both look and are reported to be ancient, in fact, actually are. This talk focuses on where discussions of authenticity often come to a head: the marble surface. Our concept of a so-called ‘original surface’ on ancient marble statuary is critically reexamined, and the overlooked importance of evidence of painting and gilding (or polychromy) is properly emphasized. Examples of sculptures with coloration, both ancient and modern, elucidate matters and present new ambiguities, while highlighting how modern ideas about authenticity often stand quite removed from ancient priorities.

It's National Polka Month!

Polka is a Czech dance and genre of dance music familiar throughout all of Europe and the Americas. It originated in the middle of the nineteenth century in Bohemia.

In 1968, the Wisconsin Orchestra leaders proclaimed January as “National Polka Month” to stimulate post-holiday band engagements and get the fans out during the cold winter months.

It’s Three Kings Day!

Three Kings Day (Tři králové), traditionally celebrated on the twelfth day of Christmas, signifies the end of the holiday season in the Czech and Slovak Republics, while offering an opportunity to extend charitable giving by making donations to roving wise men.

This holiday dedicated to Three Magi from the East to Bethlehem, bringing their gifts to pay tribute to the newborn Jesus Christ. The Three Magi, or Three Kings, Gašpar (Gaspar), Melichar (Melchior), and Baltazár (Balthasar) were led to him by the light of the Bethlehem star.

In the past there was the tradition of priests’ caroling, they used to go around local houses and consecrate them with holy water and frankincense – and mark the doors of houses already visited with the initials G, M and B. In some places, especially in the countryside, this ritual has been preserved. Here is a video from our friends at the Consulate General of Slovakia in New York: https://bit.ly/2VhvrZR
