Yesterday was “Operation Warm” at an early learning center in C**n Rapids. Firefighters fit 260 kids with a new winter jacket, hat, and mittens. Now every one of them will be warm this winter. Some of the kids showed off their new jackets in front of the fire truck.

We would like to thank our community partners C**n Rapids North Star Lions and Mauer Main Chevrolet for making this event possible.

You may have recently driven by a fire hydrant in the city that is covered in a red bag and wondered why they are wrapped up.

The red bags have been used in recent years on high traffic roads that get salted the most during the winter months. The bags help prevent road salt from getting into the nuts and bolts of the hydrants which can cause the caps to jam up over time.

If the hydrant is needed, firefighters can simply slice the bag open and use it as usual.

Photos from this week’s training, aerial truck operations.

We also spent the morning familiarizing our crews with our new Rescue UTV. There are many miles of recreational trails in the city, and open wooded areas that we need to be able to access. Our Rescue UTV gives us that accessibility. It is fully equipped with medical equipment and has the capability of safely transporting a sick or injured patient lying down.

This week we trained on skills used for RIT (Rapid Intervention Team).

In this scenario, the firefighter on the nozzle is down and needs rescuing.

With his hood over his mask, to simulate zero visibility in smoke, the rescuer follows the hose navigating through obstacles to get to the downed firefighter.

The orange bag is our RIT pack, it is an air bottle with several different ways to hook up air to the firefighter in need of rescuing. They would likely be running out of air in their own pack.

These are skills we practice regularly, but hope to never have to use.

And that’s a wrap!

Fire Prevention week is coming to an end and our Fire Prevention Team did their last school presentation of the year this afternoon.

Thank you to all of our community schools that allowed time for our crew to come in and educate the kids in fire prevention and safety.

A huge thank you to our Fire Inspectors that did an amazing job with this year’s presentations. We appreciate their hard work and dedication to making our community and our kids safer.

This afternoon we were at Innovation Science & Technology Academy.

Inspector Erickson explained all of the protective gear and the equipment we wear when fighting fires, while Inspector Peisert put it all on. This is not only cool for the kids to see, but it reinforces to the kids what we look like while wearing all our gear. This helps them to not be afraid or intimidated if their ever in an emergency situation and we need to help them.

This gear also adds at least 70 lbs to a firefighter which is one of the reasons why we emphasize good health and physical fitness.

Fire Prevention Week continues. This morning we are at Epiphany School.

The photos show the guys teaching the kids how to react when their smoke detectors activate.

We emphasize having two ways to escape their bedrooms, how to check the door for heat, and what to do if their bedroom is above the first story.

Also, bedroom doors do a very good job at keeping smoke and fire out of bedrooms long enough to escape out of a window. This is why we suggest that you always close your bedroom doors while you sleep.

Picture this: You’re frying up bacon for breakfast — something you’ve done a million times before. You hear your phone ring in the other room, so you rush to grab it. While you’re gone, bacon grease and a nearby towel combine to start a fire on your stove.

More Fire Prevention Week pictures from our Fire Prevention Presentation. This morning we were at Cross of Christ School.

Did You Know? In 1925, President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed FPW a national observance, making it the longest-running public health observance in America. FPW is observed each year during the week of October 9th in commemoration of the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage.

Stay tuned for more photos as our daily school visits for Fire Prevention Week continue.

Thank you to everyone that came out to our Open House at Sand Creek Park on Saturday. We are very proud of our department, our staff, our equipment, the services we provide, and we love the opportunity to showcase it all to the community. Especially when we can do it it in a fun and educational way. It didn’t hurt that the weather was perfect either.

Also, a big thank you to our community partners and our Public Safety partners that help make this the amazing event that it is every year.

Today we honored the life of retired Firefighter/Inspector Bob Camp.

Fire Chief Piper shared fond memories of Bob in his eulogy, and reflected on Bob’s impact on our organization and community. He was a true servant to the people his entire life, and will be dearly missed.

Bob was one of our original career members and helped organize our Union Local 1935 into the International Association of Firefighters in the 1970’s.

The group photo is a picture of retired and past members of C**n Rapids Fire. It was great to see so many of them together.
