There are certain diseases that are linked to having dry eyes, Sjogren’s disease is one of them. This is an autoimmune disease that causes the immune system to attack the body’s moisture-producing cells from the glands that make tears and saliva.
This is why it is very common to have dry eyes, mouth and skin with this disease.

We hope everyone is staying safe and as warm as possible. Eye Trends will be closed again, Tuesday, February 16 due to the inclement weather.

Virtual Learning, Zoom Calls, Working from Home all have one thing common -- long exposures to our computer screens. This has been the main cause of dry eye we have all experienced this past year. Make sure to remember to take breaks so your eyes can rest!

Our eyes are constantly working on making tears to maintain our eyes moist. The tear film is composed of 3 layers:

1. Oily (lipid) layer – its purpose is to make the surface smooth and keep the tears from drying too quickly.

2. Watery Layer – Middle layer that comes from the lacrimal glands in the eye lids. This layer makes up most of what we see as tears, its purpose is to clean the eye and remove any particles that do not belong there.

3. Mucus Layer – Inner most layer of the tear film. This layer helps spread the watery layer over the eyes surface and keep it moist. Without the mucus layer the tears would not be able to stick to our eyes.

Sometimes we could be experiencing issues with any of the three layers in the tear film that could result in a decrease tear production, while others could be experiencing an increase tear evaporation due to dysfunction from their meibomian glands.

Wearing contact lenses for long periods of time can sometimes lead to symptoms of irritation and red eyes. Contact lenses need liquid to stay soft and maintain their shape and integrity. Tears in our eyes allow contact lenses to comfortably swim in the tear film above the cornea, but a shortage of lacrimal fluids can cause contact lenses to irritate the surface of the eye. It could be due to wearing the lens for extended periods of time.

Light Sensitivity, also known as photophobia, is a symptom of dry eyes. Inflammation of the eye causes corneal irregularities which makes our eyes sensitive to light.

Itching and burning sensation is the most common Dry Eye symptom. Often times we catch ourselves rubbing our eyes to help “ease” the pain, but in reality, we are damaging our eye doing so.

Let’s talk Eye Redness-

Redness in the eyes is one of the most common symptoms of Dry Eyes. The lack of lubrication in the eye causes irritation which results in redness to the eyes. This often occurs when our eyes are concentrated on something for a long period and we forget to blink.

Dry eyes is the most common eye condition that 90% of people experience. Everyone may experience different symptoms but nonetheless all cause great discomfort. Irritation in your eyes can make it feel gritty like something is in your eye, but there really isn’t.

Hello everyone, our power is currently out and we hope to be up and running by 2:30 pm. Please stay tuned for updates.

We're reopening, Monday, April 27th!

For the Protection of Our Patients, we have implemented the following procedures in our clinics:

Limited Appointment Scheduling - in order to ensure we are able to properly disinfect and adhere to Social Distancing Guidelines set forth by our local authority. Certainly, urgent and emergency patients will be prioritized.

Fever Free Environment - Temperatures will be taken upon entering the clinic of all patients, staff, and doctors. Anyone with 99.5 degrees or higher will be asked to reschedule. Anyone who is taking a fever-reducing medication such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen will be asked to reschedule once the medication is clear from their system so we can be sure of an accurate temperature reading.

Pre-Screening Questionnaire - We will continue to ask any patient with URI symptoms to reschedule their appointment until they have been asymptomatic for 3 days or have a negative COVID test.

Face Covering - We are requiring everyone entering our clinics to wear some type of facial covering such as a homemade mask, scarf, bandana, or handkerchief.

Wash hands and sanitize - Upon entering the office, everyone will be asked to sanitize their hands. Additionally, we will request they sanitize their hands before re-entering the business area.

All office staff with direct patient contact will be required to wear a mask.

Social Distancing - We are limiting the number of patients in our office and are asking, when possible, only the patient enters our clinics for their visit. Please ask the person with your patient to stay in their car. We can text them if they need their assistance.
