Would you please keep an eye out for these horses? They went missing during hurricane harvey and have yet to be located. Their owner, Tammy, is devastated about losing them after being forced to leave them when she was evacuated. Harvey horses have been found as far away as North of Dallas and therefore they may be in your area. An anonymous donor has offered a large reward. Anything you can do would be greatly appreciated especially if you would share this information. We really want to get these boys home. Thank you so very much!

In 1909, President William Howard Taft turned the White House stables into a garage to house his newly purchased fleet of automobiles. During the early 1900s, cars were only beginning to emerge as a viable form of transportation, with most people continuing to travel by horse-drawn carriages. Taft, who became a car enthusiast during his term as president, embraced the emerging form of transportation and in 1911 built a new brick garage located off the White House Grounds between 19th and 20th Streets, N.W. Taft’s preference for cars is not surprising when considering his prior misfortunes with horses.

During the 1908 presidential campaign, The Evening Star reported that candidate Taft was nearly thrown off his horse while riding in Hot Springs, Virginia. According to the paper, Taft’s horse collapsed while descending a mountain road, forcing the future president to ride in a carriage for the remainder of the journey. The paper added that Taft survived “two or three narrow escapes from being thrown from his horse” during the trip, and suggested that Taft would “probably stick to golf” instead of riding horses.

After defeating Democratic candidate William Jennings Bryan in the election of 1908, Taft occasionally hopped in the saddle of his riding horse for exercise at the White House. When it came to more extensive travels, however, Taft favored his fleet of automobiles.

HAS YOUR HORSE RECEIVED HIS FALL SHOTS YET? 🍂🍁

As a horse owner, the good thing about the colder season is knowing you won't have to deal with as many insect-related issues as during the spring and summer months. The cold weather, however, brings different challenges to your horse’s health such as respiratory viruses — which is why fall vaccines/boosters usually include inoculations against influenza and the respiratory form of herpesvirus (rhinopneumonitis).

If your horse has yet to receive their fall vaccinations this year, contact your veterinarian today and work with them to determine the optimal vaccine protocol for your animal. Based on their situation, your horse may need additional specific risk-based vaccinations and your horse doctor will be able to provide accurate information on what products to use and why.

If you are interested in learning more about horse immunization, the AAEP's Vaccination Guidelines are available on our website at https://aaep.org/guidelines/vaccination-guidelines
