NATIONAL SITUATIONAL AWARENESS DAY
On September 26th, National Situational Awareness Day brings attention to personal safety.

Situational awareness is the foundation of one’s personal safety. It focuses on being aware and paying attention to your environment. Situational awareness also means mindfulness, and developing it makes you more present in daily activities. In turn, it also helps you make better decisions in all aspects of life.

This day highlights the importance of using situational awareness skills in everyday life to stay out of harm’s way. Harm may come in the form of walking in front of a moving car or that of an assailant. Both scenarios can be the result of distractions causing us to lose awareness of our surroundings.

In an instant, a dangerous situation can develop. Being aware of a threat even a split second sooner may save a life. Awareness gives them time to act instead of reacting. The lack of or inadequate situational awareness is considered one of the primary factors in accidents attributed to human error.

Although many parts of modern society lack situational awareness skills, our ancestors used them to great utility to survive. For decades, the military and law enforcement have taught it to their personnel. However, situational awareness training is not exclusive to their training regimens. Most experts agree that situational awareness is the number one skill for the safety of everyone.

In World War I, Oswald Boelke identified the concept of situational awareness. He realized ‘the importance of gaining an awareness of the enemy before the enemy gained a similar awareness and devised methods for accomplishing this.’

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalSituationalAwarenessDay
A great way to observe this important day is by discussing it with those around you. While you do, you’ll be improving the safety of those you love. Be human again. Pay attention to the people and events happening around you more than you pay attention to modern-day. Another way to observe the day includes:

Taking a situational awareness course.
Read about personal safety and situational awareness.
Offer a situational awareness program in your workplace.
Use #NationalSituationalAwarenessDay on social media.

NATIONAL DAUGHTER’S DAY
When it comes to offspring, National Daughter’s Day reminds of the young women and girls in our lives. On September 25th, spend time with your daughter.

Daughters bring a certain kind of joy into our world. Like all children, they have their own personalities and strengths. As parents, we look forward to discovering the world through their eyes.

Depending on where you live, International Daughter’s Day is observed on the Fourth Sunday in September. Elsewhere the day might be observed on October 1st. No matter when you celebrate, the day provides an opportunity to show your daughter genuine support, encouragement, and love.

In some countries, daughters face a rough start in the world. They are sometimes denied an education, equal employment or even healthcare. Sons are put before them and given priority. Social stereotypes set certain expectations of behavior for daughters including how they dress and behave.

The day offers us an opportunity to be thankful for our daughters and to find ways to ensure daughters around the world have every opportunity to succeed.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalDaughtersDay
Share the day with your daughter. Look back on memories or create new ones. Some other ways to celebrate the day include:

Send your daughter a card.
Take a selfie every year on National Daughter’s Day. Over the years, you will be able to see how much she and you have changed.
Donate to an organization that supports educating daughters. For example, Women One provides support to women and girls worldwide. Another is Helping Women Period which supplies feminine products worldwide.
Teach your daughter something new. Whether it’s useful or fun, practical or vital, your daughter will appreciate you for it.
Learn something from your daughter. Our daughters’ growing catalog of experiences offers us a treasure trove of information that they will gladly share with us.
While you’re celebrating daughters and YOUR daughter, be sure to share your day with us, too. Use #NationalDaughtersDay to post on social media all the ways you celebrate.

NATIONAL BRAVE DAY
On the fourth Friday in September, National BRAVE Day honors women who lift each other up, rescue each other and make each other BRAVE.

Sometimes just a flutter of encouragement comes in the form of timely guidance from another woman. Other times, groups of women provide the energy coordinated, thoughtful efforts for someone in need. Women empowering women.

Despite varied experiences and backgrounds, women come together across generations to support each other. These small tokens come in many forms. For example, a momentary reprieve over a cup of coffee during a hectic day makes all the difference. A well-written letter of recommendation for a job may change the course of a life. These small tokens strengthen a woman who may have undergone unspoken tragedy or struggles. The opportunities to empower sisters, friends, family, even a stranger are limitless. National BRAVE Day, seeks out tangible ways to encourage women to keep moving forward and to be BRAVE.

HOW TO OBSERVE #NationalBRAVEDay
Lift up the life of a woman around you. Show your support by organizing a local movie night for women. Provide gift cards at Christmastime for foster children. Create a fundraiser for a perpetual baby shower. Plan a Valentine’s Day Tea for single mothers. Offer to help edit the resumé of someone you know is seeking a new job. Visit bravefoundation.cc to find out more. Share your ideas and use #NationalBRAVEDay on social media.

NATIONAL BRAVE DAY HISTORY

Sweetlife Women has been in existence for ten years, and they look for ways to make women BRAVE and give help and guidance where needed. Their annual BRAVE Women’s Conference is every September. Find out more by visiting braveconference.cc

In 2017, the Registrar at National Day Calendar® declared National BRAVE Day to be observed the fourth Thursday in September, annually.

TEAL TALK DAY
Let’s talk. September 23rd is Teal Talk Day and each year, over 249,000 women are diagnosed with ovarian cancer worldwide. So, gather your friends, wear teal for a day out together and talk.

Join a group of co-workers for lunch. Men are welcome, also. They have mothers, wives, daughters, and sisters at risk for ovarian cancer. They should have the Teal Talk, too! Since no standard screening exists for ovarian cancer, awareness gives us our best defense. The talk takes very little time. Have a Teal Talk over lunch. In that time, approximately 28 women will receive an ovarian cancer diagnosis.

Invite your closest friends, neighbors, and sisters for drinks in the back yard. Wear your favorite teal and give the Teal Talk. Let them know early detection improves survival rates by 90%. Make sure they know the symptoms.

Persistent bloating
Lack of energy
Loss of appetite
Feeling fuller sooner.
During your Teal Talk, find more signs at Ovarcome.org.

Go for a walk with your mom and her friends. Even a short walk will be long enough for a Teal Talk. Ask them about family history and encourage them to share it with their daughters and granddaughters. Urge them to see their gynecologist to review family history for inherited risk factors. Families with a strong history of ovarian or breast cancer have a 15-40% lifetime risk when compared to the general population, according to the National Cancer Institute.

HOW TO OBSERVE #TealTalkDay
Find out more information at Ovarcome.org and have the Teal Talk with the people in your lives. Use #TealTalkDay to share on social media.

Discuss the symptoms. Don’t hesitate to see a doctor if you have any of the symptoms.
Encourage the women in your life to maintain their routine exams.
Learn more about ovarian cancer.
Support organizations researching treatments, a cure, and advanced screening methods.
Support those who receive the diagnosis.
Share your story to help inform others.
Ovarcome Founder Runsi Ayona Sen & Olympic Gymnast and ovarian cancer survivor Shannon Miller share some encouragement to get started on #TealTalkDay in this short video.

Celebrate Teal Talk Day in honor of all women diagnosed with ovarian cancer, too. Ovarcome encourages you to talk about ovarian cancer, especially on September 23rd, but also every day. Every day is a good day to talk about ovarian cancer. Follow Ovarcome on FB, Twitter, and Instagram for information, education, updates, and Teal celebrations! Together, we can Ovarcome!
