Don't forget to hold your space for the August 19th Mental Health First Aid Class through Montgomery County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. Send us your name and email to res[email protected] by July 25th.

Mental Health First Aid addresses mental health, su***de prevention, and substance use. With these issues on the rise, it is more important than ever to equip yourself on how to respond when someone is struggling.

If the time you invest in this class impacts your ability to respond to ONE person struggling, it is worth it!

This will be a hybrid class. Two hours of online class must be completed before a 6 hour in person session. The live session will be August 19th from 8:30 a 3:30 in Conroe at the Texas A&M Ag Extension Office. A grant allows this class to be offered free of charge. Space is limited.

For the One!!! 💗
Mosaics of Mercy staff and volunteers recently had the opportunity to attend Mental Health First Aid training through Montgomery County Texas A&M AgriLife Extension. We loved that this training covered mental health, su***de prevention, and substance use.

Many people ask what they can do to help the community with the drastic rise in these issues. We believe that equipping yourself on how to respond to those around you is one of the most important places to start.

Texas A&M Ag Life has generously offered to host another class for us on August 19th, 2021. It is a hybrid class. Two hours of online class must be completed before a 6 hour in person session.

Space is limited. If you are interested, please email us at [email protected] by July 25th to hold your space.
CASA Child Advocates of Montgomery County was pleased to have been invited to participate in last month's Community Help Expo: Navigating Behavioral Health and Su***de. CASA Training Director and TBRI Practitioner, Ann Marie Ronsman, spoke about TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) and childhood trauma during the expo.

Snakes are a natural part of the ecosystem and they play a very important role, including keeping rodent populations in check. 🐍🐀 Did you know that snake venom is also used in the medical field in cancer therapy and research, as well as in medications for hypertension and some forms of congestive heart failure?💊🩺

One of the questions we frequently get from the public is - are there snakes in the Jones State Forest? The answer is - yes, of course. You can decrease an encounter by staying on the trails, where you can better see the snake on the bare ground. In the very rare chance that you actually see a snake, enjoy it from a far, allow it to move along on its own, and never try to touch, move, or harm it.

Learn how to reduce your encounters and keep a safe distance from snakes. 🐍

Conroe, Texas - District Forester, Connor Murnane meets with Montgomery County landowner, Charles Horton to review objectives and updates to Horton’s 2015 Forest Management Plan.

Long-term care of private land is critically important to Texas. Sound management practices increase land productivity and enhance ecosystem services provided by forests. These critical benefits include clean air and water, improved wildlife habitat and additional opportunities for quality outdoor recreation.

With roughly 94 percent of forestland in Texas privately owned, the trees, forests—and the benefits they provide - rests in the hands of thousands of Texans. While keeping the entire state's forested landscape in mind, we inform and educate landowners on sustainable land management practices.

For information on 1-d-1 timber valuation, forest management practices, management plan development, and landscape ecology restoration contact Conroe District office at 936-273-2261.

NESTING SEASON ON STATE FOREST

#Biologist Donna Work with Texas A&M Forest Service today used a camera positioned on the end of a telescoping pole to check on the status of the endangered Red-cockaded #woodpecker RCW at W. Goodrich Jones State Forest.

Nesting season has started and continues until July 15th. With the cavity nest trees located in close proximity to walking trails, several pathways are temporarily closed to help reduce human-caused stress on RCW family groups.

Several of the nests inspected today had eggs with male RCW incubating them while one nest cavity had three healthy looking hatchlings.

During nesting season, eggs and hatchlings are vulnerable to predators such as the rat snake which could easily climb 80-foot tall pine trees to reach the nest cavity. However, the adult RCW has a defense. They build their nest cavity in live old growth pine trees, 50 years and older. The adult RCW will peck the resin wells around the cavity to produce sticky sap running down the tree to help deter the snake from reaching the cavity.

Raise your hand if you will be enjoying pecan pie this week! ✋🥧

🦃 Did you know the pecan is the official state pie of Texas? Whether you prefer pecan pie, candied pecans or pecans in your sweet potato casserole, pecans are a staple on many Thanksgiving tables - all thanks to trees.

🌳 Pecans play a major role in our holiday but, they also play a big role in Texas. Pecan trees have been Texas' state tree for over 100 years and are actually the only Texas nuts that are commercially produced.

🍂 Pecan production is also a huge contributor to our state's economy, contributing $63 million in 2020 alone according to the Texas Farm Bureau. Today, pecan trees store 7 million tons of carbon on Texas forest lands.

🥧 So as you celebrate Thanksgiving this week, and reflect on all you're thankful for, add pecan trees to your list and the many benefits they provide our state and taste buds!
