DEADLINE: June 17th, 2022

ROY G BIV Gallery for Emerging Artists invites you to apply for an exhibition in ImageOHIO, a juried exhibition of the best lens-based art including: photography, new media art, film and video, as determined by our jurors, Doo-Sung Yoo & Jordanne Renner. ROY defines new media as digital technologies including: streaming, virtual & augmented reality and broadcasting. In 2022 the submissions will be categorized as either photography/new media or film/video. The invited artists’ work will be exhibited from September 12 - October 21, 2022, at the Fort Hayes Shot Tower Gallery (546 Jack Gibbs Blvd., Columbus, OH, 43215)

ImageOhio is part of the 2022 FotoFocus Biennial. Now in its sixth iteration, the Biennial activates over 100 museums, galleries, universities, and public spaces throughout Greater Cincinnati, Northern Kentucky, Dayton and Columbus, Ohio in
October 2022.

Our 2022 theme is A Changing World. Just by being on Earth, at any given moment, and doing something or even nothing we are already changing the world. We live in an evolving world, but we need to be reminded that the important things have not altered, and will not, if we keep our properties in proper order.

@aburleson_ here for my last post. My studio’s a bit chaotic at the moment, so for my last post I’d thought I’d share the progress of my collage at ROY. In a way the gallery was my studio for the week we had for install. There was plenty of mess-making, stepping back, and reconsidering that went into this map of human history, and I only regret the pieces of information I couldn’t manage to fit. Next show I guess.
Last day tomorrow!

Our current show closes tomorrow May 6! Stop in to view works from @nalanistolz @keadkinsart @aburleson_ and Clyde Berry

@aburleson_ here again. I wanted to share some progress pics for my favorite painting currently being shown. It’s called Coming Through because I imagined the deer being received into the world like an electronic signal. For reference I also included the bits of media/knowledge that went into it.

Also, my first time doing an ink transfer on canvas. Kind of like the effect.

Hey guys this is @aburleson_ here for a little Instagram takeover.
I am first & foremost a painter but sometimes feel constrained by two dimensions, so I have found way to expand that practice through installation. I like collecting remnants, artifacts, bits of printed data, etc. and giving them a home in my work. I’d like to think that for the audience it provides a way to meet in a space, soak up that information, and create social bonds in a new way.
Here’s a few selected works, ranging from 2019 until my show at ROY (in chronological order). Ill check back in later ✌️

Designed to honor, celebrate, and engage local Artists who identify as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, this opportunity supports an emerging artist and engages the community. As we celebrate the 225-year anniversary of the Franklinton neighborhood, we are learning about our community’s history as we are planning for its future. We want to honor the communities that occupied our space before us and determine a path forward, together, in creativity.

We are publicly committing to the idea of racial justice; we want to support conversations and be a resource for supporting this dialogue. We see this residency as an opportunity for our community to better understand its roots and for an artist to be able to share their perspective. This residency includes

*studio space
*a material stipend to create work
*multiple opportunities for community engagement
*culminates in an exhibition and dialogue of work

To honor Women’s History Month, ROY is highlighting women artists whose work can be placed in conversation with the art on view at the gallery.

Dignity by Natani Notah (2019) is one installment in her “Soft Sculptures” series. Created from materials such as thread, acrylic paint, leather scraps, and faux fur, the sculpture resembles a person sleeping on their side with their back to the viewer. The form appears to be wrapped in a blanket, like an infant who has been lovingly swaddled. There is a sense of life-likeness, serenity, and sensitivity surrounding the artwork. Notah’s art examines feminism, environmental justice, and indigenous identities, especially her experiences as a Dine woman.

How does Natani Notah’s mix of materials to create human-esque sculptures remind you of the artists ROY has on view? How do you interpret these ideas about the body and the simulation, as well as transformation of the material? @maillouxcat @lydiacornett @juliamatejcek @krista.faist @bellaweiting

@krista.faist here signing off: here’s a larger peek at my studio, including some of my sculptures. My work is about sentimentality, and how memories form the mosaics of our inner landscapes over time. Both of the virtual reality pieces currently on exhibition at Roy include sculptures pictured here, albeit distorted through mirrors and photogrammetric replicas. *** I want to thank @lsantoroau for all of the amazing support, @hoodie__guthrie for the musical accompaniment in “Kaleidoscope” and all of the amazing women in this show with me: @bellaweiting @maillouxcat @lydiacornett @juliamatejcek

@krista.faist here again posting as @roygbivgallery. As I mentioned, @hoodie__guthrie and I are working on an audio visual project for @thefusefactory’s Frequency Festival. It will be held May 20-21 @caccolumbus. You can catch our work at 7 PM on the 20th.

Photos from ROY G BIV Gallery's post 03/24/2022

Hi, I’m @krista.faist and today I’m taking over the Instagram account for @roygbivgallery, where my virtual reality work is currently on view at Roy G Biv. During the pandemic, I added a third floor to my home so that I could have a private studio. I’ve been working in here for a few months now, and am really grateful to have such a nice space. Lately, I’ve been sharing my studio with my good friend and collaborator @hoodie__guthrie. Right now, we’re working on an audio visual project for @fusefactory’s Frequency Festival (more on that later, as well as a larger look at my studio). Meanwhile, my vr work is available to view at Roy G Biv through April 1, and my projection mapping work with @muralremix is on display @seventh_son_brewing until April 3!

Learn the ART of the pitch at ROY

To honor Women’s History Month, we’re highlighting female artists who’s work is relevant to the art on display at Roy G Biv.

Mona Hatoum’s Corps Estranger (1994) is a video piece that the artist took with a camera entering her own body. In this clip, she records the inside of her mouth. The result is strangely vulnerable, yet overwhelming. Her body becomes unfamiliar and largely unrecognizable.

What similarities might Hatoum’s work have to @weitingwei’s delicately sculpted, bodily forms? Or @juliamatejcek and @lydiacornett’s provocative examination of animals, bodies, and labor? Or @krista.faist’s colorful virtual environments of simulacra and overstimulation?

ROY Residency is designed to honor, celebrate, and engage local artists who identify as Black, Indigenous and People of Color through an artist residency and community engagement. As we celebrate the 225-year anniversary of the Franklinton neighborhood, we are learning about our community’s history as we are planning for its future. This residency includes studio space, a material stipend to create work, multiple opportunities for community engagement, and culminates in an exhibition at ROY. Get more details here
