My last day as an editorial intern for Glamour was August 6. This summer, I spent 10 weeks working alongside brilliant editors, writers, designers, social media managers and other media professionals. It was an honor to join Condé Nast, which also owns Vogue, The New Yorker, Wired, Pitchfork, GQ and a host of other top-class media brands. You can read all of my work here: https://www.glamour.com/contributor/janae-mckenzie
Internship Highlights:
Working on the Glamour July Cover Story: College Women of the Year. I wrote a profile on Sabrina Valadez-Rios, one of our seven honorees. PLUS: our package got a shoutout from THE FLOTUS, Dr. Jill Biden.
Learning to interview celebrities! Dascha Polanco and Ciara were fantastic.
Sharpening up my intro writing skills! Especially writing for the Doing the Work franchise.
Getting to do some personal writing for a national audience! My strawberry legs and impossible-to-detangle hair came in handy.
Briefly feeling like a model when I reviewed Glossier’s bronzer.
Visiting the One WTC office! Our in-person intern event included a tour of the Vogue closet, a Bon Appetit food styling class w Andy Baraghani, and a tour of the CN Archives w Ivan Shaw.
To cap it off: a Glamour team happy hour, where I got to meet my fantastic coworkers in person.
Thank you so much in particular to Perrie Samotin, Anna Moeslein and Bella Cacciatore for your close guidance and warm welcome to the Glamour team. Also, thank you to Jessica Radloff and Jenny Singer for making me feel like I had friends in the office (even on opposite coasts), and to Natasha Pearlman and Samantha Barry for taking a chance on me.
I had the time of my life. Trust me when I say this isn’t the end of my road with Glamour! Thank you all for your support and stay tuned.

Quick update: I’ve started writing for Vox Magazine! First, I did a fun little dive into dating during the pandemic. Click on the story to see what CoMo singles and couples are up to!
How the pandemic changed the dating game Starting a new relationship or ending an old one can be hard for anybody, but add on a pandemic and it might change some things

“I have to accept when I put on that costume, I am Jefferson the slaveowner.” I spoke with a Thomas Jefferson impersonator about how he feels portraying the founding father and slaveholder. His perspective, along with those of MU students and faculty, and a Jefferson scholar, address how to (if at all) contextualize Jefferson’s legacy. Read at the Columbia Missourian.
An actor, scholars and MU reckon with Thomas Jefferson's legacy An Ashland man who made a living portraying Jefferson sees the writing on the wall while MU attempts to contextualize his history.

Older people who maintain social connections have a 50% greater likelihood of survival. During the pandemic, they’ve found new ways to cope with isolation and survive. This piece is the second part of a feature I wrote for the Columbia Missourian on elderly isolation during COVID-19:
As pandemic wears on, seniors find walks, pen pals and phone calls alleviate isolation "It's about trying to find that balance between emotional wellness and safety...That kind of sums up our whole year,” one nursing home administrator said.

My latest with the Columbia Missourian addresses a new deadly problem for seniors during COVID-19: isolation and loneliness.
Before pandemic, elderly isolation was a major concern. Now, it's a crisis While trying to keep seniors safe, something just as deadly for older people as the virus has increased: isolation.

In case anyone ever wondered: this is how my outlines start.

With the new school year underway, more kids are at home during the day and fire safety officials are concerned with increased risk. My latest with the Columbia Missourian examines how local families prepare, as well as how low-income households are more at risk.
As kids' unsupervised hours at home increase, so does fire risk The key is realizing your children don't magically absorb fire safety; they must be taught what to do.

Ever wondered why people won’t wear masks or social distance? My latest for provides some answers. It’s a combination of psychosocial factors.
Why won't some people wear masks? It's about social norms and threat perception Some people who refuse to wear masks or social distance are under the influence of psychosocial factors, researchers say.
