The 2026 Giro d'Italia Women ended with the maglia rosa changing shoulders on the final climb, but one of the day's boldest rides belonged to a 23-year-old who started it sitting third.

Antonia Niedermaier went into the last stage 1:20 behind leader Anna van der Breggen and 31 seconds behind Demi Vollering. Rather than wait and defend, the Canyon-SRAM rider attacked into the breakaway and committed to it, riding much of the day in a small front group that eventually pulled Vollering across. By the finish she had moved ahead of van der Breggen into second overall, her best Grand Tour result.

She insisted afterwards that she had not been chasing the virtual race lead, only racing the road in front of her. "I tried everything I could," she said, and the result followed the effort rather than a calculation.

The headline number, 33rd to second, flatters the arc. Niedermaier was 33rd only after stage 1 and had climbed steadily into contention across the Dolomites and the gravel of Colle delle Finestre. The genuine drama was the final day, when a rider with nothing guaranteed chose the aggressive option and made it pay.

The win went to Vollering, who took pink from van der Breggen at the last. But Niedermaier leaves Italy with the clearest sign yet that the former best young rider is ready to contend for these races outright, with only one step left to climb.
