Tulips! Can Spring get any more beautiful? Well, yes but these are making me happy right now.

This is an experimental year as I figure out how to grow tulips in my basement for earlier blooms. Also learning about storage solutions to keep them fresh. Did you know tulips are grown as annuals when flower farming? The whole bulb is pulled up during harvest for longer stems.

Fun fact: once cut and in a vase, tulips will continue to lengthen. Keep that in mind when you add them to arrangements!

Carnations, a species of Dianthus, are January's birth flower. There are so many colors besides red and pink.

I will be starting seed for a few varieties of Chabaud dianthus very soon.

Although these came from my local grocery and are most likely imported from a hothouse in Ecuador, they make a pretty bouquet along with some white stock and boxwood and ivy foraged from my yard.

Bulbs. The Spring planning is in full swing. We planted hundreds on bulbs over the weekend. Now we wait patiently through the cold dark winter for the little tips of green that poke through the ground and open suddenly to reveal the first blooms of the season.

Another butterfly in the urban farm. I wonder what happened to her wing and if it affects how she flies.
