The students had a busy day, shopping for GRIN and socializing cats at Homeless to Home Animal Rescue & Cat Sanctuary. We are grateful to the nonprofits for allowing us the opportunity to volunteer all year, helping the community and building employment skills through service.

What a great day! Our group had a busy and successful morning volunteering at the Gahanna Library and enjoyed delicious treats there, too. The students completed their banking and enjoyed lunch at The Rusty Bucket. In our Executive Function Art Club, we began studying Dav Pilkey and initiated the creation of our own comics.

"I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.”
— Mother Teresa

Last month, a litter of kittens from Homeless to Home visited the Creekside Cottage School to help teach the students about the importance of fostering, spaying, and neutering. The students enjoyed kitten snuggles and activities. This week, the kittens visited again, and this time, the students were able to witness their growth and development, weigh them and play with the kittens. A highlight was naming the kittens according to our litter’s theme of Greek Gods and Goddesses, as the mama cat is named Athena. The kittens entered Creekside Cottage nameless and exited as Zeus, Artemis, Pan, Rhea, and Apollo. The students left with a little more knowledge about kittens and a deeper understanding of the value of fostering and caring for the creatures in our world.

For some of the students at Creekside Cottage, the learning extended even further. Several children created cat toys in their freetime and sent those home with the kittens. Many are interested in adopting their new furry friends.

One has gone above and beyond. Izzy has started the Animal Volunteer Club (AVC), whose purpose is to support local animal shelters. She has been selling handmade bracelets and treats with friends and fellow AVC members in order to raise money for Homeless to Home because she knows that shelters always need more funds to provide care for all of the animals they serve. When Izzy reaches her goal of $500, she is going to visit Homeless to Home to meet some of the felines she will be helping with her fundraising efforts…..she has already earned $250 and is well on her way to reaching her goal (selling bracelets that start at 25 cents each). This 11-year-old elementary school student is amazing……her drive, her impact, her care for others. We are inspired by Izzy’s actions, and think you will be, too. No impact is too small. Izzy is making a difference, 25 cents at a time.
