Dwight Green led the Maury County SOCM Chapter for years. He was a dear friend and a true force for good in the community. He will be greatly missed.
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dwight Green.
Dwight served as the Chairperson of the Maury County chapter of SOCM (Statewide Organizing for Community eMpowerment)for many years. He was at the forefront working to bring justice to communities being impacted by the Mt. Pleasant tainted water issue. Dwight also supported members working to stop coal ash contamination, strengthen voting rights, and stop gerrymandering in Maury County. His work in SOCM helped to organize and support teachers and other school employees in Maury County working without a contract. His leadership and support of SOCM on a state and local level will be missed. Dwight was a Vietnam veteran, a loving father, and a leader that was respected by all who had the privilege to live, work, and organize beside him.
The viewing is at 11am on Thursday, October 31st at Williams Funeral Home in Columbia. The funeral will follow at noon.

About the Maury County Chapter of SOCM

If you want to work towards social justice for everybody, regardless of who she or he is, then you will feel right at home in our chapter.
We became an official chapter of SOCM in 1999, initially sponsoring activities and workshops promoting unity and racial tolerance, encouraging participation in dismantling racism workshops, and addressing issues of discrimination in funding of public facilities.
Our chapter has worked hard to secure victories for our community. In 2009, as a result of our efforts, a proposed county wheel tax increase was successfully overturned.
When historical flooding occurred in our region in 2010, our chapter responded by providing a stream of volunteers and donation collections to the relief efforts. Our efforts have succeeded in a $20 reduction in water/sewer rates for citizens, and we are continuing to fight to make sure this decrease continues.
We are dedicated to improving the quality of lives of the citizens of Maury County, and to ensuring social justice for people of all backgrounds.
Our chapter is currently involved in several ongoing campaigns:
-Fighting for education justice in the Maury County School System.
-Working for a positive solution to the political situation in Mt. Pleasant and improving governmental accountability.
-Continuing work on water quality and lower sewer rates in Mt. Pleasant.
