A sarcomere is the basic building block unit of musculature. When the sarcomeres of a myofibril contract and shorten, the myofibril shortens, and when the myofibrils of a motor unit of a muscle shorten, the motor unit fibers shorten. And when enough motor unit muscle fibers shorten, the muscle concentrically contracts and shortens.
In other words, a muscle contraction is essentially nothing more than the aggregation of many sarcomere contractions.
