Soapmaking is a very sustainable craft. My Soap is made from food grade organic oils, essential oils and herbs. Additionally, it contains water and I use sodium hydroxide to drive the process of mixing oil and water. The hydroxide molecules burn off and in the end, all soap is, is oils and sodium.
It is sustainable because it can be repurposed to create the same product. When a pour sets up too fast, you get not so pretty soaps. Here is where you use a grater to break it down to later be reincorporated to a new mix.
Soap is a very sustainable product. Mine is made from food grade, organic oils, water, and sodium hydroxide. The sodium hydroxide drives the process of combing oil with water. Temperature is important. When the mix wants to set up too fast, we get a heavy pour and the soaps aren’t so pretty. Yet, they are sustainable because I just shred them down and reincorporate into the next batch.

Oat Bars
The first time I saw handcrafted soap was at my Grandma Inez house. She would use a wooden mold and cut the bars to look just like these.
This project is dedicated to my Grandmother who was so resourceful and who gave me a love for soapmaking.
These Oatmeal soaps will be ready in about six weeks.

“Once I asked my mother if I would be beautiful like my grandmother when I was old. She said I was beautiful now.
She told me I was sun beauty because I was young. Bright and shiny, she said.
My grandmother was moon beauty. Old people, especially old women were beautiful like the moon. Both sun and moon beauty were good, but those with moon beauty knew more secrets because they knew things and places where the sun did not shine.”

“How many years of beauty do I have left?
she asks me.
How many more do you want?
Here. Here is 34. Here is 50.
When you are 80 years old
and your beauty rises in ways
your cells cannot even imagine now
and your wild bones grow luminous and
ripe, having carried the weight
of a passionate life.
When your hair is aflame
with winter
and you have decades of
learning and leaving and loving
sewn into
the corners of your eyes
and your children come home
to find their own history
in your face.
When you know what it feels like to fail
ferociously
and have gained the
capacity
to rise and rise and rise again.
When you can make your tea
on a quiet and ridiculously lonely afternoon
and still have a song in your heart
Queen owl wings beating
beneath the cotton of your sweater.
Because your beauty began there
beneath the sweater and the skin,
remember?
This is when I will take you
into my arms and coo
YOU BRAVE AND GLORIOUS THING
you’ve come so far.
I see you.
Your beauty is breathtaking."

☀️🌙 Advice from María Sabina a Mexican healer and poet...
“Heal yourself with the light of the sun and the rays of the moon.
With the sound of the river and the waterfall. With the swaying of the sea and the fluttering of birds.
Heal yourself with mint, neem, and eucalyptus.
Sweeten with lavender, rosemary, and chamomile.
Hug yourself with the cocoa bean and a hint of cinnamon.
Put love in tea instead of sugar and drink it looking at the stars.
Heal yourself with the kisses that the wind gives you and the hugs of the rain.
Stand strong with your bare feet on the ground and with everything that comes from it.
Be smarter every day by listening to your intuition, looking at the world with your forehead.
Jump, dance, sing, so that you live happier.
Heal yourself, with beautiful love, and always remember ... you are the medicine.”
Beautiful Easter Day.
Think of Hawaii. Think of Flowers. Think of Plumeria-a rich, sweet fresh floral scent.
Then think of Spring.

Spirit Medicine Soap Co. began when a little girl found wooden soap molds filled with homemade soap under her Grandmother's bed. She was ten years old and very curious. She asked her Grandma what that was in the boxes. Her Grandmother explained it was soap that she made. The child pressed on and got more information which she filed away for future use. She learned the soap was made with fat rendered from meat, she also knew Grandma "washed" the ashes from the wood stove with rainwater. All ingredients were combined in a big pot over a fire in the back of the house, and she knew it was an old tradition brought to America from Spain-and had always loved things pertaining to the "olden days.” This young woman made it a priority to learn all she could and she began to develop her own recipes. She used herself in every experiment with the product and twenty years later, her skin shows no wrinkles and is still as supple and smooth as it was when she started serious soap making at the age of thirty-three. Tradition are important and this one is a blessing!
