Abuse is about power and control, not love. Threats involving weapons, intimidation, stalking, isolation, or controlling behavior are serious warning signs that should never be ignored.

Research shows that access to a firearm can significantly increase the risk of serious harm in abusive relationships. Nearly half of female homicide victims in the United States are killed by a current or former intimate partner, and about half of those deaths involve a firearm.

You are the expert in your own experience. There is no one-size-fits-all path to safety, and every survivor deserves compassion, respect, and options.

If a partner uses a weapon, threats, or fear to control you, your experience matters. Whether you choose to stay, leave, or just gather information, you deserve support without judgment.

If you are living with fear, confusion, or intimidation, know that you are not alone. Confidential, survivor-centered support is available 24/7. Creating a safety plan with a trained advocate can be an important step toward feeling safer and more supported.

SARC is here to be your safe space. Call us whenever you need us 979-731-1000

QUESTION: What does healthy consent sound like in a marriage?

Consent isn’t a one-time agreement. It’s an ongoing conversation about what both people like, want, and are comfortable with. A spouse should always feel safe expressing what they do or do not want. And in a space free of pressure, guilt, or anger.

Sometimes consent sounds like:
👍 “Is this okay?”
❓“What would feel good for you tonight?”
💤 “I’m feeling tired tonight. Can we just spend time together?”
☺️ “How would you feel about trying ___?”
🙌 “I’m not comfortable with that, but I would enjoy ___.”

And just as importantly, a loving partner listens with kindness and understanding. And responds to your words with curiosity and care, not guilt trips or resentment.

Marriage should be one of the safest and most supportive relationships in our lives.

No one ever owes physical intimacy simply because they are married.
