HS Girls Tournament Report – May 28

What a great day for rugby, weather was perfect…finally. We headed down to North Haven for the end of season CT Rugby HS Girl’s 7’s tournament, where we were the #3 seed. The team had a great practice Wednesday and were hoping to carry that momentum into the tournament to finish the season like we started. As many of you know we got off to a fast start at the beginning of the season and then struggled the rest of the way with injuries limiting our numbers at matches. I want to congratulate you all for sticking with it during those few weeks, you all stepped up during that time, especially Ava and Katie for serving as captains.

Our first match of the day was against Simsbury, the 2 seed. A team we lost to by just one point on a late try the last time we played. Our energy was up and we were focused on winning this game to get to the championship and the girls delivered. Tackling was on point and we ran with speed and confidence. We had a nice play out the backs with a skip pass from Katie to Lucy, that Lucy raced up the field to touch down for a try. Carrigan scored a try and was strong on defense as was Ava. Lucy added 2 more tries in the match and Katie converted one try. Kiva had some huge tackles, and Hannah was terrific in the lineouts. Zoe had some nice runs and a few strips as well. A tremendous game that allowed us to bring in Savana, Hayden and Camryn to rest a few of our starters for the final. We held on for the shutout winning 22-0. The win put us into the championship match.

We faced Fairfield in the championship, and they have been on a tear lately ripping off wins. We know many of the girls on the Fairfield team and knew what we would be up against. We had to stay disciplined on defense, make our tackles and take advantage of our opportunities. The first half was fierce with both teams making defensive stops. We were up at the half 7-5, thanks to a try by Katie and her conversion kick. The second half was more of the same but we gave them a scrum about 20 meters out that they scored from, then added another score as the game went on. Lucy scored at the final whistle, but we came up short, losing 17-12. It was a great game to watch as you all gave everything you had.

Try Scorers – Carrigan and Lucy (3)
Conversions - Katie

Shoreline 12 – Fairfield 17

Congrats to Hannah for being named Rugger of the Match for her great work in the lineouts, a big run against Fairfield and her communication on the field.

As a reminder Channel 3 was there and took some footage of the games. It’s scheduled to air at the 11 PM news tonight.

Thank you to coaches Bryan, Francesca and Sofia for making the trip and helping on the sideline as well as your commitment to the team this season. Thanks to the Spartan families for getting everyone there and your support during the games and the whole season. This doesn’t happen without our families. Thanks to Evie for getting Kiva there.

I want to thank all the players for this season. When I spoke to you individually at practice you all said how you love this team and how great everyone is. You were a pleasure to coach this season, and I will miss seeing you running broncos.
