It's things like this they really make me want to start making a much as possible at home!!

The World Health Organization (WHO) has officially classified deli ham as a Group 1 carcinogen, putting it in the same category as to***co, asbestos, and arsenic. This means there is strong evidence that consuming deli ham can contribute to cancer, particularly colorectal cancer.

Even small amounts matter: just 50 grams daily—roughly two slices—has been linked to a significant rise in cancer risk. Recent research also suggests that preservatives in deli ham may increase the likelihood of breast and prostate cancers. Beyond cancer, deli ham is associated with higher risks of Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke, thanks to its high sodium content, saturated fats, and ultra-processing methods.

Why is deli ham so harmful? Most commercial deli ham is ultra-processed, often reconstituted from mechanically separated meat and packed with additives like nitrates, nitrites, carrageenan, maltodextrin, and corn syrup solids. Nitrates and nitrites, while preventing spoilage, can convert into nitrosamines, which are potent carcinogens that damage the colon lining.

The takeaway: even small daily portions carry measurable health risks. Choosing minimally processed, whole-food protein sources is a safer way to protect your long-term health.

Check labels, limit processed meats, and prioritize fresh, unprocessed options like lean meats, eggs, legumes, and nuts.
