💫 Student Spotlight
Hannah Salmond’s path to healthcare was not a straight line, but it ultimately led to where she was meant to be.
After graduating from Walker Valley High School, Salmond enrolled with us to pursue nursing like other members of her family. Her mother is a nurse practitioner, her grandmother was a nurse, her grandfather was a medic during the Vietnam War, and her sister is studying to become a physician assistant.
Salmond left to pursue a career in education and took classes at a four-year university, but everything changed when her mother asked her to help at the healthcare clinic for a day.
“I started crying because I knew this was where I was supposed to be,” Salmond said. “I tried so many other things; I pushed against healthcare because of my family. Ever since I was a kid, I’ve cared for others. My mom said she knew I would be in the medical field one day.”
Salmond said one of the biggest influences has been her professor, Karmon Kingsley, the Medical Assisting Program Director.
“Ms. Kingsley is one of the best professors that I’ve ever had,” Salmond said. “She’s tough, and the expectations are high, but she explains everything so well. You don’t just focus on passing the class- you actually understand the material. I am learning medical terminology and gaining skills in multiple medical assisting classes that will prepare me for my externship and my future career.”
Salmond will graduate in July and transfer to a four-year institution to complete a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her long-term goal is to become a nurse practitioner and work alongside her mother.
While in school, Salmond plans to work as a certified medical assistant to help pay for her education while gaining additional clinical experience.
For more information about the medical assisting program, contact Karmon Kingsley at [email protected] or (423) 614-8702.

🐾 Define Your Tomorrow at Cleveland State!
A Tennessee Promise student, Walker Hicks enrolled with us after graduating from high school. He chose to pursue electrical engineering after gaining hands-on experience as an intern with a utility company.
Walker plans to transfer to a four-year institution after earning his associate degree, where he will continue to study electrical engineering. His goal is to build a career in power distribution with a utility or energy company.
“My favorite part of Cleveland State is the teachers,” he said. “Every professor is very engaged and willing to help. If I don’t understand a concept or need help with homework or labs, they are willing to meet with me as soon as they can and stay as long as needed to ensure I fully understand. Cleveland State is helping me define my tomorrow by preparing me for further education and my future career.”
