An initiative to help all dogs in Cleveland find loving homes and the care they need. Welcome to CLE Pups! We are glad you are here.

This is a volunteer effort run by residents and supported by Northwest Neighborhoods. Our goals are to increase the live release rate from the Cleveland Kennel by:

- Increasing the number of families reunited with their lost dogs.
- Increasing the number of dogs adopted from the Cleveland Kennel.
- Supporting partnering rescues and shelters so that they can pull more dogs from the Cleveland Kennel.
- Provide information about resources to community members who own pets and are struggling to care for them.
- Educate the public about the needs at the Cleveland Kennel. We know that our community is creative, compassionate and resourceful. The intention is to present information promptly and truthfully so that solutions can be found quickly and implemented efficiently. This page is not affiliated with staff or volunteers at the Cleveland Kennel or the City of Cleveland. It is a citizen-led volunteer initiative.

Please remember that we keep this collage updated (pictures of dogs in the collage are still in need) and, or transparency, post comments indicating what happened to dogs who were in the collage previously. We have this pinned to the top of the page at all times to make it easy for you to find and share. These pups can be adopted or pulled by rescue organizations.

Think that the Cleveland Kennel only has (the most amazing) Pitties for adoption? Nope! Look at all of these amazing dogs who are sitting there waiting for their forever moms and dads to find them!
As an open intake shelter, they can not control the number of dogs that come in, but they do have limited space. Every adoption from the Cleveland Kennel can save a life. It could be the one that you are adopting or the new intake that needs an open cage so that they can be listed for adoption, if their owner does not come to claim them during their stray hold.
Maybe YOU are their perfect mom or dad and they are YOUR PERFECT PUP!
Maybe it’s YOU WHO WILL SAVE A LIFE!

Please follow CLE Pups for updates. We always pin the current list of dogs who are urgent at the Cleveland Kennel at the top of our page.
These are some of the pups at the Cleveland (Ohio) Kennel who may have the most limited time to find adopters or rescues if/when they run out of space due to high levels of intakes and are at risk of being euthanized. The Cleveland Kennel is full. Help is needed now. Time is not guaranteed for any dog or puppy. If you are interested in possibly adopting, fill out a meet and greet request form immediately.
They are an open intake shelter and do not have control over how many come in, but they have a limited number of kennels. They are legally required to take every stray found in the city and hold them in hopes that their owners come to pick them up.
The live release rate in 2024 was 73.9%. In 2025, through August, the live release rate was 74.3%. Only around 25% of the dogs impounded at the Cleveland Kennel ever have owners come to claim them. Help is certainly needed and urgency is real.
The live release rate is the percentage of dogs that leave a shelter/kennel alive and includes those returned to owners, adopted out or transferred to another rescue/shelter. The inverse of this is the percentage of dogs that are euthanized and die while in custody of a shelter/kennel.

Please this post on your own profile page, on other social media platforms and in groups that you are in. These pups need us to get the word out about how awesome and in need they are.
If you know anyone who has lost their dog, ask them to check www.clepups.com regularly. Some of these pups may still have moms and dads looking for them.
If you are open to fostering (any type, size, breed, age) of dog, but aren't connected to a rescue, please reach out to us and we can help you connect with a rescue near you.

HELP IS NEEDED NOW! The Cleveland Kennel is full. Pups need to be picked up by their owners immediately. When the kennel is full, good, adoptable, healthy dogs loose their lives because there isn't space to hold them. They are legally required to hold all new intake for their stray hold in hopes that owners come and pick them up.

Not everyone is on social media, so you can also let anyone who has lost a pet to know they can check out www.clepups.com or visit the Cleveland Kennel to look for their missing dog.
These pups NEED TO GO BACK TO THEIR FAMILIES!

Space is limited. Adopters and rescue pulls are needed now.
Please share so that their families see this and reclaim them immediately. When the shelter is full, as it has been, and large numbers of dogs are impounded, lives are lost to make room for new intakes when owners don't come to claim them the adoption rates are slow.

Here is a little glimpse of the reality for dogs in Cleveland. We deeply appreciate Signal Cleveland for writing this article, for including facts and details, for showing just how dedicated and passionate the ACOs at the Cleveland Animal Care & Control are and what they are up against due to a combination of lack of education and access to resources in our community as well as inhumane decisions made by some Clevelanders. Thank you for following the stories of dogs and the folks that helped them along the way and for showing the emotional and human side to this story.

It clearly shows that the problem facing far too many dogs in Cleveland is multi-faceted, which is why our approach is multi-faceted and rooted in facts, transparency, education, outreach, collaboration and care.

From the article:

"Cleveland City Kennel on Detroit Avenue can accommodate about 150 dogs, and it’s at or near capacity most of the time."

"They frequently encounter dogs that have been neglected or abused, that are emaciated, living in filth, tied up in yards in the heat and cold, or tied to fences and abandoned, or already dead. They deal with owners who make excuses or scoff at them and drop the occasional threat."

“We don’t have the option to say, ‘Oh, we’re full, we can’t pick up any more dogs today,’” she said. “The dogs just don’t stop coming. It’s crazy the amount of dogs that are just running around loose all the time that we just pick up every day.”

"Watching a dog leave for a new life with people who love it 'is the greatest feeling in the world.'"

We highly recommend you read the full article. Link is in the comments.

If you are inspired to be part of the solution, know that you can help by adopting from the Cleveland Kennel or partnering rescue, fostering for a rescue near you, donating to Friends of CITY DOGS Cleveland, a local rescue group or the Slow the Flow free bully breed spay/neuter program in Cuyahoga county, advocating for spay/neuter, talking to your elected officials or helping CLE Pups with social media outreach. Message us if you need help finding a way to connect with those making a difference and saving lives!
