Rita Kathleen (Day) Shookman Obituary March 20, 2026 - Legacy.com Consumer 02/04/2026

I'll miss Grandma Rita's enthusiasm for whatever story I was sharing. I'll miss her clam dip, with extra garlic, and the chocolate sauce that despite her careful record keeping, we can never quite replicate. I'll miss her witty responses and the wry sense of humor that influenced so much of my own. Rest in peace, Grandma. ❤️ We knew just how much we were loved.

“How’d it go? Did it feel like a long day?” “No, it was perfect.” Isla is off to kindergarten, and my heart is still trying to catch up. ❤️

This week we started a new chapter as my mother-in-law Carol started chemotherapy. In May, she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer, carcinosarcoma. If you haven't met her, maybe you've tasted her cookies and known immediately the gift that she is.

She is the single most selfless person I've ever known. She's Nana: a trusted voice of reason, a talented creative in the kitchen and crafts, a sly sense of humor. I can't relate with jokes about MILs. Mine is wonderful in every way. She sets the bar high for the kind of mom I aspire to be.

She had major surgery May 15, on Isla's fifth birthday. This is after my sister-in-law Dana spent the last year bravely managing breast cancer and thyroid cancer concurrently. It's an awful feeling to be dipping into our lived experience with cancer. But instead of feeling helpless, we know how to get to work. We know the resources we need and how to tap into them.

It’s been a decade now since we lost my Dad to cancer. In that time, so many names have been added to our list. It's a devastating prayer I recite each time there's a new diagnosis. Another loss. And I know we're not alone.

Nearly two million people in United States who get cancer every year all have a story like Scott’s. As we struggle to make sense of a world without Scott, our dream is a world without cancer. His was, too.

It’s my tenth year riding in Pelotonia, to raise funds for cancer research to get there. As Carol tries cold capping to hold onto her hair, Caps Fore a Cause has been a blessing to our family, giving her that opportunity and all the advice she’s needed to navigate this new chapter. (The golf outing also falling this week was Angelo’s silver lining.)

If you read this and a face you know pops into your mind, I ask you to donate to one of these awesome causes (links below). Or simply leave a note or send me a message of the person you’re fighting to honor. We’ll pray and ride for them, too.

Happy day celebrating my mom, the ones that made me a mom, the mom I got through marriage and all the other amazing women who’ve mothered me and shown me how to be a mother. 💕

Aliza’s family ‘in shock’; her lawyer charged with her murder 03/05/2025

Justice for Aliza has been the rallying cry since Aliza Sherman was killed March 24, 2013. After 12 years, 1 month and 8 days -- Greg Moore, man on investigators' radar since day one, a man responsible to advocate on Aliza's behalf, was charged in her murder. Thank you to Cleveland Jewish News for allowing me to write the justice story I've been hoping for, the leap toward justice Aliza and all who love her deserve. You can read it at the link below.

I miss you so much, Dad, and even more, when I think of what you’ve missed. 🤍 But I feel your energy everywhere. I see your eyes in Isla’s, and I try to spread your smile wherever I go.

WHEN YOU GIVE TO MEDWISH... | What does your dollar do? 28/11/2023

On this Giving Tuesday, I have to shout so many important causes close to my heart: Women's Endowment Fund, WOUB Public Media, Stewart's Caring Place: Cancer Wellness Center, VeloSano, Pelotonia, Down Syndrome Association of Northeast Ohio. One of Storyglow Studio's first believers is MedWish International. I'm so proud of the work we've created this year telling Medwish's story. This piece (animated by the incredible team at shark&minnow) answers the question we all ask when giving to charity: what will my dollar do?
