When our x-ray glasses are on the fritz, and we need to know the composition of a roof, it’s time for core cuts. A simple exercise of cutting a hole, observing the makeup, then installing a patch.

This roofing assembly appears to be a concrete deck that was hot mopped with coal tar. Then two plies of fiberglass reinforced felts were laid, and it was capped with a 90mil cap sheet, all mopped in coal tar.

Understanding the current system guides us in selecting the replacement system.

Today we find ourselves on the roof of the student center at Case. We’ve been tasked with sorting out the roof drainage to hopefully prevent icicles of doom from forming over the entry every winter.

This roof at a condo in Shaker Heights is basically new. Only a year or two old. But the unit underneath has several leaks in their space. Well, even if it looks good on top, there must be other issues allowing the infiltration.

We studied it, made recommendations for restoration, and will be designing a project for this client.

It'e not very exciting, but site visits during construction to review the integrity of the weather barrier are important steps to take. Remember, as Richard Nickel once said, "Great architecture only has two natural enemies: water and stupid men"

Case wanted their logo prominently displayed at the intersection of Cedar and MLK. So we took their logo and designed a big ole sign and interior lighting to make the structure behind the sign glow. A great team of contractors put it all together and tonight was the first night we got to see it light up.

Today was the ribbon cutting for the addition and renovation of the Medina County Veterans Service Office. We are proud to have been the firm selected to design the project and help see it through.

As work on Riverfront Landing in Pittsburgh, PA progresses, ECS continues to provide observation services to review the air barrier and waterproofing installation.

The office for today is in Pittsburgh at the Riverfront Landing Apartments that are under construction. ECS is providing consulting services for the building envelope.
