Applications are now open for Cleveland Leadership Center’s Accelerate 2022: Citizens Make Change, presented in partnership with Citizens. Accelerate is a civic pitch competition that gives individuals an opportunity to bring their community-focused ideas to life. Anyone with an idea to make Greater Cleveland a better place to work, live, play, or visit can apply. The overall winner receives $5,000 and the remaining five finalists wins $2,000 to help launch their idea. Ideas with a technology component can win additional $3,500 in the Technovation Competition. A resident-led group called the Informative Action Committee held an event called Lift Every Voice and Vote on October 2nd on 116th & Buckeye. To help inform voters, Ideastream Public Media, in partnership with The City Club of Cleveland, will present the general election debate with the two Cleveland mayoral candidates. Election Workers in Cuyahoga County will make up to $200. An Election Worker must be registered to vote in Cuyahoga County, but there are some roles that do not require you to be a registered voter.

Over 200 students in CCEL's Civic Engagement Scholars program are participating in special tours this week hosted by The Sculpture Center (near campus) to visit the powerful "Crossroads: Still We Rise" art exhibit. The exhibit is free and on display through this Sat 9/25. It uses augmented reality (AR) and visual arts to explore “the forgotten or overwritten histories of Cleveland and its effects on race and neighborhoods.” There are AR visuals on display both at The Sculpture Center and at different community assets throughout six Cleveland neighborhoods. Provide academic assistance in math and science to youth (grades 1-12) through the MLK Branch of the Cleveland Public Library. *Students will be walking to this site.

Guide grade 1-4 youth in after-school activities including wellness, literacy, creative writing, and STEM through the AdvantageCLE Tennis & Education program.

- Seeds of Literacy Thursdays 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. (https://cglink.me/2cS/r1249899)
Volunteers at Seeds of Literacy assist adults with high school coursework as they work to complete their GED.

- William Rainey Harper School, CMSD Fridays 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. (https://cglink.me/2cS/r1259102)
Assist students at a Cleveland International Baccalaureate elementary school (grades 1st-6th) with homework and academic learning on a tech-based platform during the school’s activities period.

- Mandarin Chinese with Youth Fridays 12:45 to 2:15 p.m.
Interact with students and assist in an exploratory Chinese language and cultural program at a local middle school. Students should have at least an intermediate level of Mandarin proficiency.

- MedWish Fridays 1 to 4 p.m. (https://cglink.me/2cS/r1249907)
MedWish collects and delivers medical supplies to those providing medical care in developing countries. Volunteers will help sort materials into categorized bins for future shipments.

- Eliza Bryant Village (Scheduling for this site is in progress, please inquire to learn more)
Provide one-on-one friendly visits to elderly nursing home residents in their rooms who are unable to leave their room due to physical limitations or personal choice.

CCEL Serves leaders will transport students in a CCEL van and are required to complete the van certification process (https://tinyurl.com/CCELvancert). The leader also orients new volunteers to the site and facilitates an informal reflection about the service experience in the van ride back to campus. Leaders should be in good academic standing and free to lead the site at the same time weekly from the end of September to the end of November (excluding school breaks).

CCEL Serves Pop-up: Assisting with Projects at a Local Shelter this Saturday, September 18 (two shifts available)!
The Lutheran Metropolitan Ministry men's shelter has constructed wooden “pods” for bunk beds to increase social distance. Volunteers will help complete the final steps on the pods which includes applying a fire retardant and sealant on the wood and some light sanding of edges. Masks are required.

There are two shifts available; 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 12:30 to 4 p.m., which includes travel time in a CCEL van. For more information and to register for a time, click here: https://cglink.me/2cS/r1258184.

The Saturday Tutoring Progam 09/07/2021

The Saturday Tutoring Program provides free tutoring to northeast Ohio youth in Grades 1st-12th on a variety of subjects on Saturdays from 9:45 a.m. to 12 p.m. at The Church of the Covenant on-campus (11205 Euclid Ave). Program dates are September 11-November 20 (excluding 10/16). Volunteer tutors arrive at 9 a.m. for training on their first date of attending the program (tutors are welcome to join in any date during the semester, although regular participation is valuable in building relationships with the youth).

Enter the building through the main entrance, and complete this registration form (https://form.jotform.com/212305110948144) before your first tutoring date. Masks are required to be worn on site at all times, and being vaccinated against COVID-19 is strongly recommended. You will be matched to tutor a youth 1-on-1 or in small groups. The Saturday Tutoring Progam The Saturday Tutoring Program provides free tutoring services for students in grades 1-12 in Greater Cleveland. The program occurs in an environment of mutual learning and respect to help students achieve their academic goals.
