After nearly a 30 year career as a artist I felt like my personal favorite accomplishment was winning the design for the Georgia Trout Stamp tag. Other than maybe winning the Federal Duck Stamp I was satisfied that in my art career I wouldn't be able to top that as any kind of awarding winning artist. I was wrong. Last fall I was ask by Jeb Gipson to do a painting for the song he wrote, "House in Heaven" that he wrote and dedicated to Chandler (Chan) Patterson, who was one of his best friends that was called home way to soon in a tragic accident. I too knew Chan personally, he was my Great Nephew. I am his father's uncle and his Grandmother Caroline's brother. When he asked if I would do the painting I immediately said yes; then it hit me about the level of deep emotion that this one would take to pull from my mine and put into a painting. Jeb's song made it easier then I ever imagined. I played the song over and over again. I could feel his pain and sense of loss through his words in the song dedicated to a close friendship these two young men had from growing up together. As I painted the song, each part also brought out for me great memories watching Chan grow up. Especially one particular hunting trip. The English Setter in the painting reminded me of that trip which made me laugh and smile. Jeb released his song "House in Heaven" on February 17, 2023 and it has really taken off and resonates with so many people who have suffered the loss of a family member or friend. This painting for me will now always be my most personal favorite accomplishment as an artist. It helps tell a story. The story of a well loved young man who touched the lives of so many in his short time here on earth. I am honored Jeb and all of Chan's family loved how the painting turned out. I am still amazed at what all Jeb captured in writing his song about Chan. And then when put with his voice and guitar; for me he proves his talent runs deep into his soul. Great talent always does. And lastly for all those that have been asking, YES, there will be prints coming soon. So keep your eyes out for information regarding those early next week.
Count down to the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition (SEWE) is on!! Just finished this piece.. titled “Fiercely Loyal”. If you’re a Boykin Spaniel owner you know that how truly loyal the breed is to their owners. Love all the working dogs, but lately as a first time Boykin Spaniel owner they have truly stole my heart. Original (20 x 30) available through SEWE.
Now just six weeks away, I always feel like I can't paint enough hours daily to be ready for the Southeastern Wildlife Exposition Show (SEWE). Working on several song bird images this weekend.
Happy National Bird Day! Love watching, viewing, seeking and painting birds!
I love to paint quail. They are in fact my favorite subject matter. Recently I told my photographer wife I needed more quail photo reference. She agreed, so I got this one and 2297 more. Guess I'll be painting lots of quail since I have no excuse not to now.
