It was great fun last Saturday to witness Cyndi Pirkle’s surprise when her husband Jim brought her to Main Street Gallery where a birthday present he had sneakily purchased for her awaited. Just arrived: Theresa Disney paintings!
Normally we're as organized as any three-story art gallery can reasonably be. But it's not every weekend when 55 large paintings (as shown in this short video) and even more small bird sculptures arrive at once. So pardon that our lower level didn't look neat as a pin right after a supersized van showed up with all the works that will comprise our first exhibit of the season, Theresa Disney's "Cut Loose." By next Saturday (June 11), when Theresa's exhibit opens, we'll have things handsomely displayed. We've been at this for 37 years, so we're confident about that! And, of course, Theresa has given us so much beauty with which to work, we can hardly go wrong. We appreciate that some collectors are anxious to preview the art, and we promise to have a nice sampling online by Friday afternoon (June 10). We'll be sharing a bunch on social media, as well. And, of course, we'd be happy to see you in person next Saturday or one weekend soon, too. “Diggin’” it at Main Street Gallery
Here's a short video with Tony Raffalovich, one of the 14 pottery artists in our current exhibit, “Diggin’ Clay: Celebrating Finds from Regional Potters.” Tony discusses the vessels that show up frequently in his ceramic-and-wood creations, a highlight of the exhibit, which continues through Oct. 16. Tony began painting in 1980, and in the mid-1990s returned to school at Georgia State University to finish his BFA, majoring in painting and drawing. After 13 years pursuing a successful real estate career, he retired six years ago and reignited his art career. “Having always been interested in ceramics, I attended classes for five years at Callanwolde Fine Arts Center in Atlanta,” Tony says. “About the same time, I became interested in woodworking, bought a lathe, and began turning wooden bowls which became an integral part of the roughly 350 figures I’ve assembled using clay, wood or a combination of the two.” View works by each "Diggin' Clay" artist on our website's Exhibitions page (linked in Comments). “Pieced Together” at zmain Street Gallery
Della Wells, Jeffrey Kronsnoble collage exhibit, “Pieced Together.” . Here is a video of our new collage exhibition “Pieced Together,” featuring works by Della Wells and Jeffrey Kronsnoble. Della is self-taught, and Jeffrey is academically trained – in fact, is a retired University of South Florida art professor. These accomplished artists approach collage with different missions. Collage is Della’s main form of expression, the way she processed difficult childhood experiences when she began creating in her 40s, and the medium she uses today to process complicated feelings about life as a Black female American in 2021. For Jeffrey, collage typically has been the starting point in a process that leads to larger paintings. In his artistic practice, collages have served as maquettes – French for scale models. Della has a growing national and international audience that appreciates her intricate and soulful collages. Jeffrey’s oil paintings are represented in many major museum and private collections but his evocative and expressive collages have not been offered for sale until now. We think they have a gem-like quality of their own that merit close attention, as well.

When Missionary Mary Proctor sent us two large boxes of new paintings recently, we were struck by how vibrantly hued they all were and how each one was centered on female figures that conveyed such motion. And of course all of them came with Mary’s trademark positive messages. It just seemed like a group of work that positively fit together. So we here at Main Street Gallery decided to go with Mary’s flow and hang all the work in one space so our visitors could enjoy the connections. Changing seasons in New England
We’re open today and have a little spring in our step because it’s the first day of spring! To mark this happy occasion, we’re sharing a short video of work by Ed McGrath, our featured artist in one of our upstairs galleries. Ed is a longtime Georgian who paints landscapes from his earlier years in New England, where the change of seasons is felt rather sharply. The largest painting, which you’ll see on the middle of the video, “Winter in the Village,” is 36” x 48” and is a stunner.
