β›ˆοΈ Thunderstorms can be especially overwhelming for children with autism. The loud thunder, bright flashes of lightning, changes in air pressure, and disruption to routines can all lead to increased anxiety or sensory overload.

If storms are in the forecast, here are a few ways to help your child feel safe and supported:

πŸ’™ Let them know a storm is coming before it arrives so they have time to prepare.
🎧 Offer noise-canceling headphones or let them wear their favorite comfort items.
🏠 Create a cozy, calming space with blankets, pillows, dim lighting, or sensory tools.
πŸ“± Use visual schedules or social stories to explain what thunderstorms are and reassure them that they will pass.
🌈 Practice calming strategies together, such as deep breathing, fidget toys, or listening to calming music.
❀️ Most importantly, stay calm yourself. Your reassurance and steady presence can help your child feel more secure.

Every child experiences storms differently, and that’s okay. What helps one child may not help another. The key is finding what makes your child feel safe, understood, and supported.

πŸ’¬ What strategies have worked for your family during thunderstorms? Share your tips in the comments, you never know who you might help today.

Not only has our partnership providing adaptive swim sessions been a success with one session a week, but the demand was so overwhelming that you added another session and it filled up, too!

That is not only a win for the families and for the Y, it’s a powerful testament to the deep need for inclusive, accessible programs in our community.

Because of your dedication, vision, and heart, so many children are receiving free, one-on-one instruction, and families now have a safe, supportive, and joyful environment to build confidence, learn vital water safety skills, and simply have fun!

Thank you, Lakota Family YMCA, for listening to the needs of our community, dreaming big, and diving in headfirst to make a splash! The impact of this partnership is going to create a ripple effect for a long time to come.

Here’s to making waves, breaking barriers, and creating a more inclusive community for everyone!

Love everybody πŸ’™
