This week, the City Council approved an appropriation of $73,000 along with a job description for an Economic Development Director, a position which Chicopee once had and in recent years has been without.

This position will be vital to bringing new growth and business opportunities to Chicopee that will help create jobs, offset residential taxes, and put Chicopee back on the map.

I want to thank City of Chicopee - Mayor's Office for their work in drafting this job description at the Council’s request, and I look forward to working with whoever fills this vital role.

Statement regarding last nights Committee of the Whole meeting:

It’s incredibly disheartening to see that another proposal to genuinely better the governmental structure of the City of Chicopee has fallen flat with little or no discussion. However, that’s just the democratic process, and life will go on. I can only hope that future administrations within Chicopee are as committed to providing funding to our schools as this one claims to be. If the time arises I hope that proposals like my non-binding ballot initiative to have appointed rather than elected officials or this special act giving the Council more control over local finances can be reconsidered. But that will be for a more forward thinking generation of politicians to accomplish if and when they see fit.

I know that many of my colleagues on the Council find me tiresome to work with at times, but I hope they know that every order and motion I put forward, I do it to try to improve how local government works for the people of the City of Chicopee. At the end of the day, we’re all trying to work toward that goal even if we disagree on a few votes. I’m proud of the robust and efficient public services Chicopee provides while keeping taxes comparatively low. I think they stand to function just a little better with some meaningful reform and discussion, and I’m proud to be the only one starting those discussions.
