The Hobo Nickel Carvers of the Rails
Nationwide. 1933-1940. 2 million men rode the rails. No jobs. No homes. Called hobos.
Most begged. Some worked. A few carved.
“Buffalo” coins — Indian Head nickels — were soft. With a nail and a spoon, you could recarve them. Turn the Indian into a hobo. Turn the buffalo into a train.
Bo Muller, 40, lost his farm in Iowa. Lost his family to scarlet fever. Rode for 7 years.
He carved nickels. Not for money. For trade.
Rule of the rails: “A carved nickel buys a meal, a night in the barn, or a pair of socks. No questions.”
Bo carved 400+. Each one different. Hobo with a bindle. Hobo with a dog. Hobo sleeping.
But he always carved one thing the same: the date. And under it, “I was here.”
In 1938, he gave a nickel to a farmer’s kid in Kansas. Boy was 8.
That boy kept it. Grew up. Became a banker. In 1979, he found Bo in a Denver flophouse. Paid for his room till he died in ’82.
The nickel is in the Smithsonian. The carving shows a man sitting. Under it: “1938. I was here.”
