For the Chicago-area, comprehensive reproductive healthcare is accessible. For the rest of Illinois and the surrounding states, this isn’t the case. Chicago Abortion Fund expands that access, helping those who are in need of an abortion or other care. Next week, in recognition and celebration of the work of CAF and on the 50th anniversary of now-gutted Roe v. Wade, join us for a gathering at Firehouse Grill in Evanston. Get motivated and inspired by a few speakers including the iconic Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky and young leaders on the frontline of this work. Join us on Jan 22 from 4:30-6:30 at Firehouse Grill. All proceeds go to CAF; tickets are available here: https://chicagoabortionfund.salsalabs.org/roevwade50/index.html

Calling all storytellers!

Applications for storytellers are now open. https://forms.gle/6w2crjDH59CFb9Wz7

1. With Tom Lenz, Josh Hoyt, and Mike Loftin: What are the lessons of organizing tenants or community residents? https://bit.ly/GameChangeOrg
2. With Calvin Holmes and Kristin Faust: What are examples of “risky” initiatives and methods used in affordable housing and community development projects? https://bit.ly/RiskLesson
3. With Dr. Amy T. Khare, Michele Dreczynski, and Mike Rohrbeck: Can we actually know “what works” in community planning or market intervention strategies to achieve sustained diversity? https://bit.ly/SustainableDiv

Thank you for attending Sweet Home Uptown while we gather to reflect on history and begin to make history where there’s a community with racial equity and economic diversity.

Honoring:
Tom Lenz | Mover & Shaker
Tom Lenz was Voice’s Executive Director from 1980 to 1988, leading a dynamic team, building strong alliances with the Harold Washington administration, forging new affordable housing partnerships and engaging tenant leadership in innovative ways. He’s had an impactful career of making things happen, including at LISC, in support of affordable housing and disability rights in Lake County, and in consulting for change with prominent non-profits, governments, and institutions, including the Archdiocese of Chicago.

Calvin Holmes | History Maker
Calvin L. Holmes, president of the Chicago Community Loan Fund, has been changing the trajectory of Chicago’s affordable housing market for three decades. Through conventional, unconventional, and often experimental means, Calvin has tested and stretched the boundaries of community and economic development strategies, taking risks that others in the lending and public sector would not, and building an experiential base that can inform community and economic development innovation policies and programming into the future.

Marlene Barton | Legacy Leader
Marlene Barton is an activist in affordable housing, social justice and movement issues for decades in the Uptown community, with years of service on Voice of the People’s Board of Directors. At 82 years young, her commitment, hard work, and practical, problem-solving approaches are an inspiration and example to other residents. Rarely in high profile roles, Marlene has always been in the room, at organizations and with issue campaigns dating back to the origins of Voice of the People.
