At first, the lady of the house seemed pleasant and happy to have guests—though a little tired. But as soon as she heard about the dinner tradition, she exploded.

"That's pathetic! Get out!" she shouted, throwing the gift and slamming the door in Barney and Mimi's faces.

Tears streamed down Mimi’s cheeks. She had never encountered such rudeness. For the first time, the elderly couple felt unwelcome in their own neighborhood.
