Have a winter sore throat, and that lozenge isn't cutting it? There's someone you can turn to in your hour of need!
It's St. Blaise and his feast day is today, February 3.
Blaise lived in the fourth century. He was a bishop in England, but one day, he gave it all up and ran off to live in a cave, where he took care of wild animals. Well, one day, a woman ran into the cave with her son. He was choking on a fishbone. The kid’s face was turning blue, and his tongue was twisted.
The bone was starting to poke through his neck. Blaise calmly blessed the kid’s throat and he coughed up the bone.
The nun who told us that story was so graphic, that I swore off fish sticks for life. Every Friday I ate a ketchup sandwich for lunch.
Eventually, the Romans found Blaise and threw him in jail, probably for practicing medicine without a license.
When the kid’s mother heard about the arrest, she went to visit him, but she didn’t bring him blankets, she didn’t bring him food. She brought him candles. Go figure.
So now you know why the priest uses two candles to bless your neck on the Feast of St. Blaise. Not two lit candles! Be careful!
Get yours blessed every year, it works. Better than Ricola!
In the end, Blaise was beheaded, so that's sort of the ultimate sore throat.

From Vicki Quade, one of the creators of the hit comedy, Late Nite Catechism, comes this Halloween treat.
Get your tickets now! Holy Ghost Bingo is at the Beverly Arts Center on Friday, October 18, for one night only! https://thebeverlyartscenter.com/event/holy-ghost-bingo/
The premise of Holy Ghost Bingo is that Mrs. Mary Margaret O’Brien, a former nun, is here tonight to raise money while playing bingo and talking about Halloween traditions, scary movies, condemned board games, haunted churches, the best candy, and the worst costumes. It’s a crazy night of Halloween trivia, audience interaction, and the funniest costume contest you’ve ever seen.
Add to that a box of wacky prizes, some Halloween candy, fun bingo cards, and a lot of Catholic humor for a night of entertainment you’ll never forget. And in this interactive bingo show, you’ll actually play bingo. What could be more fun?! You’ll be laughing so hard, you’ll have to be careful watching your bingo cards!
