WRITING STYLE STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
I wrote my first self-published book, CAPTAIN KYTT and the Raiders of Gammaron, in an action/adventure pulp fiction, cinematic, and amusingly sardonic style. Pulp fiction refers to sensational, action-packed, and often cheaply produced fiction popular from the early 1900s to even the 1980s. The term characterizes fast-paced stories – often crime, horror, or science fiction – that emphasize lurid plots, graphic violence, and sharp dialogue with literary quality not being the main concern. In other words, not serious literary fiction, but commercial fiction for entertainment purposes only. Technically, pulp fiction stories are not perfect. They don’t have to be perfect. Half the fun is in the crudeness, mistakes and imperfection, as in improvisational jazz. So I intentionally style my writing to reflect that. As a young man I was influenced by comic books and popular mass media television entertainment. As a kid, I had a serious book in one hand, and a comic book in the other. So I injected sound effects found in the comic books and TV shows like the BATMAN series from the ‘60s, which would pop up graphic toon balloons and starbursts during fight scenes with POW! BAM! SOCK! SMACK! And even though some readers find it difficult to parse, I wrote certain characters dialogue in a thick accent, known as phonetic “eye dialect”. Many writers have used this technique to add realism and impact, such as Mark Twain, Charles Dickens, H.P. Lovecraft, and Flannery O’Conner. So as a result, most readers might find my work unreadable. But I’m convinced there are many many readers who will understand it and get a real enjoyable kick out of it, such as fans of graphic novels, and action/adventure movies, etc. Most important of all, I want my writing style to reflect a joyous sense of fun. I want to intrigue the reader with not only serious action and drama, but also humorous buffoonery and horseplay, which you could call tragicomic bathos, or “playful pain”, which Charlie Chaplin was a master of. So please, don’t take me too seriously, because I don’t. And never will. And when my readers come away from reading one of my stories feeling the happy joyousness of gleeful delight, then I will consider myself to be a successful writer. . . 😎🤩👍🙏🍀👽🦸‍♀️🦸‍♂️👨‍🚀🐉☠️⭐️🌟✨💫💲💲💲💲💖⁠💖💖💖⁠💖💖
