Neopolitan Lighthouse is a domestic violence agency that provides comprehensive support services for victims of abuse and their children in Chicago, IL.
Neopolitan Lighthouse was founded in 1984 by a group of professional women and men who recognized the critical need for domestic violence support services for women and children on the west side of Chicago, in the Humboldt Park and Garfield Park communities. This not-for-profit community-based organization originated as a grass-roots volunteer effort. During its first two years of operation (1984-
1986), Neopolitan Lighthouse provided victims/survivors of domestic violence with a 24-hour crisis line, counseling, and advocacy services. Neopolitan utilized “safe homes” in the community to shelter battered women and their children, and addressed the needs of the larger community through food distribution, after-school tutoring, and adult literacy programs. In 1986, the agency introduced its flagship Domestic Violence Shelter Program, which provided room, board, and in-house support services for abused women and their children. Today, Neopolitan Lighthouse provides an array of comprehensive support services for victims of abuse, which are designed to assist them in securing safety, overcoming the trauma of the abuse, exploring their options and resources, and regaining their independence and self-sufficiency. All services are provided through the agency's Domestic Violence Shelter Program and/or Walk-In Program, and include:
