Last January Playmakers laboratory was at risk of shutting down indefinitely. The pandemic hurt Playmakers Laboratory’s finances and ability to teach in schools. The nonprofits board voted to close the organization, a move that devastated company members and alumni. With the amazing efforts of our staff, volunteers, and supporters we were able to raise our goal of $60,000 to help us get back on our feet.

Our organization relies on the generosity of supporters and donors like you to continue our work. This year our Celebration of Authors Gala will give guests a chance to see a live performance of stories, written by students from the 2022 to 2023 school year, adapted for the stage by Playmakers very own teaching artists.

We hope we can count on you to make the celebration of authors event the best one yet! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

THANK YOU, Beyoncé & BeyGood for your recognition of PlayMakers Laboratory as an Organization Committed to Service!
We LOVE serving our students throughout Chicago and aim to do it for plenty more years to come.
PlayMakers Laboratory is a nonprofit organization in its 26th year. We provide arts education programs to students aged 7-13 throughout Chicago, focused on storytelling, theater, and social-emotional skills.
PML is an ensemble of teaching artists who create an experimental learning environment in which students share their personal voices and celebrate the power of their imaginations. PML accomplishes this through creative writing workshops and in-school performances of students stories. PML also engages the broader community in support of the visions of young people through public performances of their work.

The Fire King, which you can read below!
🔥👑🔥👑

The Fire King by Leslie, 5th grade, Dixon Elementary

There was once a man who was covered in fire. His eyes blood red his hair looked like cooled magma. The fire king said “Whad do you wanne Bethany” Bethany responded “Please come back home, your family misses you.” The fire king screamed “how am I suppose to come home if I burn every thing I touch” and the he accidentally burned Bethany. The Fire King said “oh no what have I done.”

The End.

WHAT MOTHER NATURE DOES TO YOU
By Jai, New Sullivan Elementary
There was no tornados and then when mother nature saw all her grass and trees being cut down by the people who lived in log cabins—who would for their fires, she got mad. She said “don’t cut down any more trees or else I will have a tornado to kill you” The Cabin people did not believe her they said “You are kidding” she said “try me” then they cut more trees and she got more angry and angry. She put the hot air on top and the cold air on the bottom and then she started to spin and spin with her arms and they did not believe she was mother nature, but then they started to, but she started to throw the tornado at them and they died because the tornado was so strong they couldn’t handle it that they passed out and mother nature killed them. When mother nature gives a warning don’t try her or you will die. THE END.

Secret Pilot
By: Diamond, Columbia Explorers Academy
Long ago there was a famous singer but they didn’t want to be a singer. The only reason they were one was because they wanted to make their parents proud. So they kept quiet. Their name was Boda Frost. They really liked to go to the beach with friends. They lived in Chicago. They actually really love planes and the sunset. Their dream was to fly a plane and fly into a sunset with their partner. But they were in a secret relationship and they did a lot with each other. Then a few years later they came out to their parents and Boda and their partner got married. THE END.

Eeooo! Eeooo! The Sirens are ringing telling you to make your Tax Deductible donation to PlayMakers Laboratory before the year is over…. Otherwise you’ll be dealing with those pesky IRS moles in April!

www.playmakerslab.org/donate

Please enjoy this staged story titled: IRS MOLES by Ben from Hough Street School. Adapted by the PlayMakers in our 25th Anniversary Celebration.

IRS MOLES
By Ben L, Hough Street School
Eeooo! The sirens rang throughout the city. Speakers popped out of buildings. “Run, the IRS Moles are coming” said the speakers. Everyone ran. They knew that moles would make them pay. “Come on” said Harold to his mother as they ran. “But the cookies” said his mother, “we need them.” “We’ll have to leave them” said Harold. “Dang” said his sister. “I say we fight back against this tax collecting” said Bob who was 2 and very smart. No one noticed. He hopped down from his mother and ran back to the house unnoticed by his family. Suddenly out the window he saw a bunch of Moles in tuxedos. “Those must be the IRS Moles” thought Bob. Abruptly one walked up to his house and knocked on the door. Bob found a ladder and opened the door. “You have taxes to pay” said the Mole. Now Bob may have been a genius but he didn’t know what you were supposed to pay taxes with. He knew that he had to give the Mole something, so he went to the cupboard and got some squishy canned peas. When the Mole saw the peas he screamed and ran for his life. Moles have a horrible allergy to squishy peas. All the people came back and told Bob he should be mayor. The only person who did not like this idea was the current mayor. But nobody cared and Bob led them wonderfully. THE END.

"A House" is one of our favorite Holiday-themed stories, and we're so excited to bring it to you on Monday! PlayMakers Lab is celebrating our anniversary of 25 Years of Students’ Stories with two public performances on Monday, December 5 at 6:30 pm & 8:30 pm at the Neo-Futurist Theater.

For 25 years, PlayMakers Laboratory has provided vital arts education by conducting creative writing residencies in Chicago elementary schools. PML’s ensemble of professional actors, comedians and musicians bring the young authors’ stories to life as raucous sketches, songs and movement pieces, performing first for students in their schools and then for the public.

You can support the creativity of Chicago youth by purchasing tickets to see a story like this performed LIVE at our 25th Anniversary Show at www.playmakerslab.org/shows

A House by Lucy, Loyola Park After School Program
One day there was a house on ridge elfs lived there and the elfs just bought the house. The next day the elfs lived there one of the elfs went to the bathroom and all of the elf went after him but they all wanted to go to the bathroom in the house. There are 100 elfs waiting for the bathroom. There is one bathroom in the house. All the elf have name their names are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and on and on to 100 and elf number 1 says “We should have 100 bathrooms in this house.” So number 99 went to the neighbor and used their bathroom. Number 10 went to the school and all the elf went to the school except number 99 and 5 but the school was full so all the elf that are not 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 99 had to go home and hope that 5 is done…with the house bathroom so some one came and built 100 more bathrooms so all the elf can go to the bathroom the problem is solved. From Block Club Chicago: "PlayMakers Laboratory nearly closed during the pandemic despite its more than two decades of teaching theater and creative writing to Chicago kids.

Its board voted to close due to lost opportunities to partner with schools and parks on programs. But after its staff and volunteers rallied to save the organization, PlayMakers will return to the stage Monday for two special 25th anniversary shows.

PlayMakers Laboratory’s “25 Years Of Students’ Stories” is 6:30 and 8:30 p.m. Monday at the Neo-Futurists Theater, 5153 N. Ashland Ave.

The show will be a take on PlayMakers’ flagship production, “That’s Weird, Grandma,” a live sketch show in which professional actors put on plays written by kids. For tickets ($25), click here.

The new show comes nearly a year after PlayMakers’ board voted to dissolve.

The pandemic has been especially brutal for PlayMakers, which receives funding through in-person instruction in schools and live performances, which were restricted during pandemic shutdowns. With its revenue streams gone, the board early this year decided to pull the plug, staff said at the time.

In response, staff members and supporters worked to form a new board for the group and organize an emergency fundraiser to keep the lights on. It worked, with PlayMakers raising more than $60,000 last spring, said Brandon Cloyd, executive artistic director at PlayMakers."
