Ayyyyeee, DID YOU KNOW that The Body Divides to Pray almost didn’t make it onto Beauty and Her Beast?

Why? Because that damn Obbie West had already done all the heavy lifting so what the hell was I supposed to do? My options were to make some sort of attempt to honor the work or say to hell with it. But how, was the million dollar question. I know so many artists that would have taken this moment to prove themselves and truthfully, upon hearing about the collab before hand, some might’ve even believed I wasn’t capable. But for me, it wasn’t even that. it was different: I knew whatever I created had to exist only as a compliment, never as a shadow or distraction.

And listen, I’m not an artist who’s mastered embodiment if you’ve ever seen me try, you know my body’s usually two steps behind the idea. But I do love theatrics. So instead of pretending to be Broadway-ready or give into the theatrics of ot all, I leaned into what I do best: building concepts that stretch language and imagination. When he agreed to collaborate, something he rarely does, I’ll never forget him saying he trusted me not to do anything that would harm or go against his brand. And I thought, “Wow, thanks a lot. No pressure at all, huh?” But honestly, that trust was everything.

I don’t even know if he’s had time to really sit with the track because he’s sooooooo busy, but hearing how many of you call it your favorite has been more than enough. Honored doesn’t even begin to cover it.

Revelations While Creating This Project

Creating this project revealed more than I anticipated about art, about people, and about myself.

1. Art is deeply personal and wildly subjective. While no one creates hoping their work goes unseen or unappreciated, you eventually accept that not everyone will embrace what you do. That realization doesn’t diminish your gift, it frees you from needing approval to keep creating.

2. Gatekeeping exists, yes. But sometimes, what we call exclusion is really hesitation, many of us only want to learn from certain people or stay in familiar circles. Growth requires the courage to reach beyond comfort.

3. Artists, study your craft. Not just your genre, learn from excellence wherever it lives. Innovation often comes from looking outside your lane and applying what you find.

4. Every project asks something different of you. To honor it, you must surrender, to the process, the timing, and the transformation it requires of you.

5. And finally, renew your relationship with your craft. Make room to enjoy the art without critique. Step outside the comparison trap. You don’t need to chase the spotlight to feel light. Sometimes, the truest glow comes when you’re just sitting with what you love.
