Write a two-page scene where two characters are trying to convince each other to go to a different place (shopping, a party, a museum, an amusement park, the moon, etc.) Who won their choice and why?

If you’ve been writing for a while, then no doubt you know that all stories need a beginning, middle, and end. For those reading who are new to writing, then trust me, the fundamental structure for storytelling is everywhere.

"At times the world can seem an unfriendly and sinister place, but believe us when we say that there is much more good in it than bad. All you have to do is look hard enough. And what might seem to be a series of unfortunate events may, in fact, be the first steps of a journey." - Lemony Snicket.

Have you tried using The Most Dangerous Writing App? There’s nothing quite like the fear of all your hard work evaporating before your eyes if you pause too long to collect your thoughts! Squibler.io’s quirky app trains you to combat writer’s block by threatening to erase everything you’ve written if you stop typing for 5 seconds! If you write through your allotted time, you’re able to copy or save what you’ve written. It’s a fantastic way to shake yourself out of that “gotta get it right on the first try” mentality and just let yourself pour your thoughts onto the page. Please give it a shot the next time writer’s block locks you up!

Have you seen “Up”? Remember the first 4 minutes where nothing was spoken, but SO MUCH was said? We like to think that overwriting exposition, descriptions, and redundant information is how you write a novel. Instead, try describing only what they need to know to make sense of your story and let them conjure the rest in their imagination.

Write a scene with three characters in it and one object of your choice. The first character wants to take the object, the second wants the thing left alone, and the third wants to destroy the object. Who succeeds and gets their way? Why do you think you chose that particular character to succeed in their goals over the other two? Now rewrite the scene and have either other character get their way. What did you have to change about the scene for someone else to succeed?

Remember all the living furniture in “Beauty and the Beast”? Those characters are some of my favorite parts of that film: Lumiere, Cogsworth, Chip, and Mrs. Potts! They all had a role in the castle when they were human, and how they served purposes similar to their old jobs but in a more literal sense as objects of their old castle functions. Whenever I need to brainstorm, I will try to think up a handful of jobs that might exist within a castle like the Beast’s, and then imagine what object they might have transformed into as part of the curse as a way to get my creative mind going!
