In partnership with ALJP Consulting, we are launching the search process for our new Executive Director!

Our Executive Director search committee is chaired by Sidney Lee, VG Board Vice President, who co-chaired our Artistic Director search earlier this year. He will be joined by his colleagues on the board, Susan Weiss and Judith Gethner, Playwrights Ensemble member Marisa Carr, VG Interim Managing Director Roxanna Conner, former Board member and longtime VG supporter Steven H. Adelman, and Jose Wilson, Director of Facilitation and Organizational Learning at North Lawndale Employment Networks and a NACC partner. As part of the search process, this committee will undergo bias awareness training to ensure equitable consideration of all interested candidates.

We also want to take this moment to extend our deep gratitude and thanks to Roxanna Conner for stepping into the Acting Managing Director role over the past 18 months. Her leadership has been instrumental in bringing Victory Gardens through this time, and we are excited to share that she has agreed to take on a new role at the Theater once our permanent Executive Director is hired. As Producing Director of Engagement, Roxanna will continue to lead our education and community programs, while also expanding our work in the areas of inclusion, diversity, equity, anti-racism, and access (IDEAA). This new leadership role reflects the incredible impact Roxanna has had on the organization, and allows the Theater to grow its commitment to new, diverse programming that reaches into the community.

Lessons on Leadership and Community from 25 Leaders of Color 09/16/2022

Lessons on Leadership and Community from 25 Leaders of Color

"Indeed, one of the most common things we heard from leaders of color was that they felt “called” to their work. Some spoke about being driven by a desire to address challenges that they themselves or their community experienced. Others talked about the desire to create new definitions of what good can look like for future generations. The motivation of collective success and the accountability it brings are strengths that these leaders can bring to any work they do."

Membership Survey By IATSE’s United Scenic Artists Local Finds “Strikingly” Low Percentage Of People Of Color

“It is the start of a new entertainment season and attention is being drawn not only to what stories are being told, but who is telling those stories,” said Sherrice Mojgani, a Local 829 member and Eastern Region trustee who co-led and facilitated the union’s census efforts. “At Local USA 829, we are storytellers, but this census data shows that our demographics do not reflect the makeup of the United States and our communities – the very source of our stories. We must work together, including employers, to build an industry that can fully support BIPOC workers, resulting in more diverse teams of storytellers and more dynamic stories. That works starts here in our union.”

Membership Survey By IATSE’s United Scenic Artists Local Finds “Strikingly” Low Percentage Of People Of Color United Scenic Artists, IATSE Local 829, has released its first-ever demographic survey of its more than 5,000 members nationwide. It is with great sadness that we give this update:

On September 7th, two days after Labor day, our positions were terminated.

“This whole thing is avoidable because we have a transition board assembled of 11 people who were willing to step in and take over. And now this board would rather see the theater shutter than see it go on under different management.”

A GoFundMe to support the remaining 8 full-time and 10 part-time staff is in the link in our bio.

After a Long, Starring Run, Will Racism at Last Get the Hook? 09/05/2022

After a Long, Starring Run, Will Racism at Last Get the Hook?

"Ingui pointed out that the rigid way regional theaters function is very different from the fluid way theater is created — “and that’s part of the base problem,” she said. “After 50 years without change, their mission has become keeping the company alive as opposed to making the plays. We haven’t allowed ourselves to ebb and flow with the times.”

After a Long, Starring Run, Will Racism at Last Get the Hook? We can no longer ignore the theater’s systemic inequities. But leaving them behind may remake the industry in unexpected ways.
