Bes is the ancient Egyptian god of childbirth, fertility, sexuality, humor, and war, but served primarily as a protector god of pregnant women and children. He is regularly depicted as a dwarf with large ears, long-haired and bearded, with prominent ge****ls, and bow-legged.

Usually, he is shown holding a rattle but sometimes a snake (or snakes), a knife, or a sword. The image of Bes was often positioned at gates for protection and almost always appears outside of birth houses. He was also a popular image used in household goods such as mirrors, cosmetic cases, on furniture, and as knife handles.

His feminine aspect is Beset who appears in spells to ward off ghosts, dark magic, evil spirits, and demons. Bes himself is actually a demon, more than a god, but that word should not be understood in the modern sense. A 'demon' (from the Greek word daimon) could be a good or bad entity along the lines of the Mesopotamian demon Pazuzu, who likewise presided over pregnant women and infants. Although Bes is frequently associated with his feminine aspect as consort, he is more regularly identified with the goddess Taweret (Tauret), the hippopotamus deity of childbirth and fertility.

A UNICEF-led initiative is tackling the dilemma of some billion people who still don’t have connectivity to the World Wide Web in a novel way through a joint venture with the International Telecommunication Union, which led to the creation of Giga in 2019.

Giga has made strides in connecting schools to the internet in developing countries around the world.

The first step in this process was mapping schools and their connectivity through Project Connect. Giga uses machine learning to scan satellite images to identify schools on an open-source map. To date, it has pinpointed over 1.1 million schools across 49 countries and connectivity data for a third of these schools.

Having identified a huge number of schools in need of internet accessibility, the next step in the process was creating a novel fundraising initiative that tapped into the world of blockchain, cryptocurrencies and nonfungible tokens (NFTs).

Giga teamed up with Dutch artist Nadieh Bremer to launch a collection of 1000 procedurally generated NFTs minted on the Ethereum blockchain. The NFTs were produced using Giga’s school data to represent those with and without internet connectivity.

The public sale in March 2022 sold out in three hours and raised $550,000. The additional 20% of funds raised came from secondary sales on OpenSea.

Arsnl is a new digital platform that guides artists and institutions through the creation of digital projects and ambitious works of art on the blockchain.

The series on offer, “Geometries,” is the culmination of a thirty-year dialogue with computation and a sixty-year exploration of painting and physical space. The series features 22 three-dimensional forms rendered in white.

Arsnl will sell 100 editions of 20 of the designs, which can be viewed at arsnl.art, with a starting price of $1,000 for each edition. Two additional forms will be gifted to buyers who purchase an entire set.

Upon purchase, buyers will receive the NFT, which affirms you are the owner of the Geometry, as well as the file for the artwork in several formats, including JPG and MP4 for image and video viewing or display, SLS for 3D printing, GLB for model manipulation or use in virtual reality, and USDZ for Augmented Reality viewing. 😍

In 1872, Cambodia's King Norodom I made a two-week state visit to Manila. He was given the typical pleasantries: a 21-gun salute and a dinner hosted by the governor-general. His itinerary also included a tour around the country in modern-day Tagaytay and Pampanga.

During his visit, the king fell in love with a certain Josefa Roxas y Manio, a member of the prominent Roxas clan. Ambeth Ocampo writes that the king tried to win over the Bulakeña by offering a gold jewel as big as a mangosteen. He then proposed to Roxas, but she declined, using religion and her duty to her aging parents as an excuse. With this, the king made his way back to Cambodia alone but left the priceless piece of jewelry with Roxas.

When he's not preserving dead animals in formaldehyde or encrusting skulls with diamonds, Damien Hirst is known for his spots.

In July 2021, Hirst created “The Currency,” his first project involving NFTs. It consists of 10,000 unique watermarked, microdotted and hologrammed spot paintings.

Each artwork is numbered, titled, stamped, and signed by Hirst, with a watermark, a microdot and a hologram containing his portrait, and a title generated through AI using some of his favourite song lyrics. On each piece, no colour is repeated. 😲

Each image in the series was sold for the modest price of $2,000, but buyers had to choose between taking a physical painting, or an NFT that can be traded on cryptocurrency platforms.

All 10,000 paintings are represented at the gallery, suspended in perspex. The 5,149 works whose owners opted for the physical are greyed out, the pieces now no doubt cheering up walls around the world; the remaining 4,851 are tangibly there, ready for their multimillion-pound bonfire, due to begin in October. The painting pyres await them upstairs.

Hirst will set the works on fire himself at the gallery on October 11, a day before the opening of Frieze London, one of the world's biggest contemporary art fairs.

The Currency exhibition is open now at Newport Street Gallery, running until 30 October 2022.
