The story of Asifa Bano is not just a story of a crime... it is a tragedy of calculated cruelty & an institutional betrayal that shocked the world. In January 2018, 8-year-old Asifa, a child from the nomadic Muslim Bakerwal community in Jammu and Kashmir, was abducted while tending her family's horses by local men led by a retired government official, Sanji Ram, who masterminded the crime to terrorize and drive her community out of the region. Held captive in a local TEMPLE, Asifa was kept in pitch-black darkness, starved, and heavily drugged with sedatives so she could not cry out while being systematically TORTURED and brutally R*PED & ASSA*LTED for seven days by GROWN MEN, including Special Police Officer DEEPAK KHAJURIA and PARVESH KUMAR, before they finally strangled her and crushed her skull.
When her lifeless body was found dumped in the bushes on January 17, the horror intensified as local police investigators Anand Dutta, Tilak Raj, and Surender Verma accepted a bribe of 150,000 rupees from the mastermind to destroy evidence, deliberately washing Asifa's blood-stained clothes and wiping down the crime scene to protect the killers
The nightmare quickly escalated into a national political crisis under the state's ruling PDP-BJP coalition GOVERNMENT when local right-wing groups, openly supported by two sitting state cabinet ministers, held massive rallies carrying national flags to protest the arrests and shield the predators. Due to severe communal polarization and death threats against the victim's family, the Supreme Court of India stepped in and moved the trial to Pathankot, Punjab, where a fast-track court ultimately sentenced the main attackers to life imprisonment and the corrupt police officers to five years in prison, causing the state government to collapse in shame and leaving behind a chilling reminder of a system that completely failed an innocent child.
How could the PDP-BJP coalition government stand by while its own state cabinet ministers openly marched to shield child predators?

On 29 May 2009, Neelofar (22) and Asiya (17) went missing. Their bodies were recovered the following day, 30 May, from a stream in the Rambi Ara area.
Their deaths sparked widespread grief, outrage, and protests across Kashmir. More than a decade later, many people continue to believe that important questions remain unanswered and that justice has not been fully delivered. The case remains a painful memory for countless Kashmiris and is often cited alongside other cases where families have sought accountability and transparency.
Neelofar and Asiya will always be remembered. Their story continues to symbolize the demand for truth, justice, and dignity.
