RIP James Farmer

I’ve been in a state of denial the past week since I found out about James passing. We had recently reconnected about making music together again and were sharing inspirations, works in progress and memes. I’m still in shock from it all but I’m finally coming to terms with the fact that he’s gone.

James and I have a long history dating back to my first years living in New York City. I met James when he was touring with his band Mother/Father and my friend Elias said that I have to meet him, that he was an exceptional musician.

Talking to James that first time I could tell I was talking to a living legend. When I heard his voice while on stage, I had tears swell up and goosebumps all over. We became instant friends and starting sharing music with each other.

Eventually he started making his own solo music which was like a combination of new wave, terry lewis and Jimmy jam style r&b with an angelic voice akin to Sam Cooke.

We made two mixtapes together and I released his first solo project under the name KROVI. Those songs are so timeless and I’m so honored and grateful that we were able to share them with the world.

When Lexi and I got married, we had James and our friend Corey perform covers of classic Motown songs at our wedding. He absolutely crushed the performance and I’ll never forget it.

As time went on we grew apart as he lived in Nashville and I in LA. On top of this I know he was dealing with a lot of addiction problems and it was difficult communicating with him during this time.

Eventually he sobered up and was super healthy and we started talking again. I’m so gutted as I write this because I wish I could have been there for him more during that painful period of his life.

I am feeling a slight amount of relief as I write this but also a mix of deep sadness, gratitude, longing, heartache, confusion and love all at the same time.

I’m sorry if this is how you are finding out about James passing. If you knew him please tell me any happy memories you have of him. It was a blessing to know him and to have collaborated with him so closely. Sending love and peace to his family and close friends. Love you James/Bob.

I decided to put together a remix project for ‘3FOR82’ for somewhat selfish reasons. My intention was to have versions of the songs from my latest album that are more club-friendly and would easily fit into my own DJ sets. Most of the remixers on 3RMX82 have been making tunes that I play in my sets already, so I’m grateful to have their takes on my own work. Now I’m gassed that these remixes are available to the world!

This also closes the 3FOR82 trilogy with 3 LPs worth of music. 36 songs and 36 testaments to our younger selves.

After doing a 4 hour set in SF this past NYE, I decided that all of my sets this year are going to be as long as possible. There are so many sides to my sound and a myriad of music that inspires me. The only way I can express even a fraction of that is through extended sets. Every set will be unique and will explore new tunes, old tunes and everything between.
