Celebrating Black History! The imprints of African Americans throughout history are the cornerstone of American history.
Let's celebrate and recognize some fashion icons that paved the way.
1. Elizabeth Keckly - Born a slave. Became Mary Todd Lincoln (Abraham Lincoln wife) personal dressmaker. After buying her freedom , she became a well-known seamstress to the elite in Washington DC.
2. Ann Lowe - First African American woman to be well recognized as a fashion designer. She designed one of the most famous wedding dresses in history. The ivory silk taffeta wedding gown worn by Jacqueline Kennedy.
3. Ruby Bailey- born in Bermuda. She became a fashion designer and important figure in the Harlem, NY social scene designing costumes in print and embellishments.
4. Jay Jaxon - designer of French Couture. Worked in fashion houses of YSL and Christian Dior.
5. Willi Smith - One of the most successful African American fashion designers in history. His label (Williwear Limited), which launched in 1976, grossed over $25 million in sales.
