5 years ago today was my solo st******se debut! 🤩

TL;DR - burlesque is incredible & I’m grateful 🥹

Ever since 🌎 gaea lady ⭐ ‘s first iteration of p(;)ssy magic cohort, intensive, & showcase, my creative process has ebbed & flowed. For the first 2&1/2 years, I only performed sporadically (maybe twice a year) for specialty of self-produced shows.

Then I took a year & 1/2 off to become a mama. Now postpartum, I’ve felt a delicious reclamation of my creative energy, inhabiting my new body, & the ways I’d like to express this aspect of me.

Im starting to have a body of work that I’m proud of & a community of kind, inspiring people around me (so if you’re reading this, thank you for being here) 😌

Here are some lessons I’ve learned so far…

🧡 This art is not created on an island. Im so grateful I learned this early because it helps me feel less indulgent as a soloist & more supported. My ancestors, teachers, collaborators, friends, legends, & folks who have paved the way are always there.
💜 Be a fan first. Got this phrase from Samson Night, Miss Exotic World 2023 & I think it’s absolutely true. I am constantly inspired by the legends, seasoned performers, & icons that have made this art what it is.
🧡 The body is a portal not a project. Oof does this need to be a daily reminder. Since pregnancy & childbirth, my body is completely different & it is an active process to release beauty standards & yt supremacist body ideals.
💜 It has always been political. This art form is rooted in mockery of class systems & has kin-ship with s3x wrk; with the intersecting layer of racism in this country. It is our work to decolonize & dismantle the hierarchies that continue to decide who is deserving of worth.
🧡 Vulnerability is strength. Not just on stage but in creative process & sharing art. I realized that rejection is part of the process, just like anything worthwhile, it is not going to come without effort.
