Michael McClintock is Heartland Song Network's featured Artist of the Month! They'll share more on Michael all month, and we'll be playing a fundraiser, live on their page on Oct. 14th at 7pm CDT.
Heartland Song Network is excited to announce our next featured artist of the month. Michael McClintock Music is a passionate guitarist and tresero based in Kansas City, influenced by Jazz, Brazilian and Cuban music.
Since 2013 Michael has been a part of Ensemble Ibérica, a nonprofit performing arts organization directed by Beau Bledsoe, performing the music of Iberia (Spain and Portugal) and its colonies. The ensemble features extraordinary musicians from classical, jazz, and folk music traditions, both locally and from around the world.
In 2016 Michael and his wife Dálida founded Cubanisms, a project dedicated to promoting Cuban culture through music and guided travel services to the island. On the musical side of the project, the ensemble, “Cubanisms” fuses the Cuban Tres with some sparkles of Salsa, Jazz, Brazilian and Afro-Cuban rhythms. The two albums they have released “Acento Cubano” (2017) and “Trilingual” (2019), have received great reviews from Cuba, Colombia, and the USA. These compilations have also opened the doors to Michael to participate twice in the Jazz Plaza International Festival in Havana, Cuba, once in 2018 and again with Cubanisms in 2019. The fusion that Michael has developed with the Tres and other non-Cuban styles of music have had a notorious acceptance on the island.
Michael graduated from the University of Missouri Kansas City Music Conservatory with a Bachelor of Music in classical guitar performance in 2006 studying under guitarist Douglas Niedt. Michael’s studies of the Cuban Tres started in 2013 and have continued in his several visits to the island. His main professors have been Efraín Amador (creator of the Tres Method at the National Art Schools and University of Arts, Cuba) and César Hechavarría (El Lento). Michael served on the Board of Directors of the Kansas City Jazz Society in 2013 and was nominated by The Pitch Kansas City as "Best Musician" in both 2018 and 2019, and Cubanisms has also received a nomination for "Best Local Band" in 2018 and 2019. Michael has performed with many ensembles in the Kansas City music scene, and in addition to Ensemble Iberica and Cubanisms, is actively part of Slim Hanson and the Poor Choices, Siento y Vivo Flamenco, and the F/M Duo, who are performing a fundraiser for Heartland Song Network on October 14th, 2020.
