🚨 SCAM ALERT: COMPUTER, BANKING, GIFT CARD SCAM

On July 21, 2026, a resident reported a sophisticated tech‑support and banking scam that began while she was using her laptop. The victim received a pop-up message stating that access to her computer was temporarily suspended. The pop‑up provided a “Technical Support” phone number, which she called. She was connected to someone claiming to be a Microsoft employee. After a fake diagnostic, she was transferred to another individual pretending to be a banking representative. They falsely claimed there was a $6,000 charge to a p**n site in China and instructed her to create a “duplicate transaction” to reverse it. To do this, the suspects convinced her to withdraw $5,500 and purchase gift cards at a local store, then provide them with the card numbers and security codes. After doing so, the suspects then claimed her phone was compromised and pressured her not to tell her husband and then transferred her again, this time to someone posing as a banking representative of a different bank, who claimed there was another $4,500 fraudulent charge and attempted to direct her to repeat the scam at a different retailer.

Fortunately, her husband intervened before more money was lost. The victim reported the incident, contacted the retailer, filed a report with IC3, and provided screenshots documenting the fraudulent pop‑up. In total, she lost $5,500.

🔎 WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW IF YOU RECEIVE A MESSAGE OR CALL LIKE THIS:

• If you get an unexpected pop‑up or call claiming your computer is “suspended,” do not call the number provided. Shut down your device and contact your trusted tech support or the manufacturer directly.
• Banks will never ask you to withdraw money, purchase gift cards, or create “duplicate transactions.”
• No legitimate company or government agency will tell you to hide information from your family.
• If you receive alarming or urgent calls about fraud, hang up immediately and call your bank using the official number on the back of your card.
• Report local fraud concerns to the Denver Police Department at (720) 913‑2000.
• Report suspicious banking communications to the Colorado Attorney General at stopfraudcolorado.gov.
• Submit financial impersonation scams at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
