Tornado Watch 🌪️

Severe weather is forecast for this afternoon as the storm system that passed through Tennessee last night heads our way. We can expect to see heavy rainfall, which could lead to localized flooding, and high wind gusts, with the possibility of tornados. Make a plan now for where you would go if a tornado warning is issued. If you are not already signed up for Chesapeake Alert, now is a good time to do so because the system will send you alerts straight to your phone in the event of a tornado watch or warning. To sign up, visit www.CityOfChesapeake.net/ChesapeakeAlert.

Weather Warning!

Please see the attached Weather Briefing from the US National Weather Service Wakefield VA (NWS), along with words of weather wisdom from Emergency Management:

*Thursday Day – Heat wave with rain. Monsoon like conditions possible. You may even hear some thunder in the evening
*Thursday Night – You wonder if it's ever going to stop raining
*Friday Day – You wake up to rain and chilly temps. You have the day off so you don’t think much of it. Suddenly, wind gusts fling your holiday yard decor across the neighborhood. Blow-ups look like they're part of the Macy’s Day Parade
*Friday Night – Nose hairs may freeze when you when you walk outside. Beware of stepping in shiny puddles. They're probably black ice and you’ll be taking a ride… to the ground
*Saturday Day – you wonder if you live in Virginia or North Dakota
*Saturday Night – You find a polar bear and igloo in your front yard. You feel like you’ve been teleported to Siberia

In all seriousness, the major concern will be the potential for ice, especially if the roadways do not dry out Friday night. Good news? Heavy winds and warmer ground should help.

Stay safe, y'all!
