Effective January 1, 2020, recreational cannabis use will be legal under the law in Illinois. This is a reminder to anyone reading that the federal prohibition of the use, possession, or transaction of cannabis remains in effect. Use of cannabis—whether recreational or medicinal—is sufficient legal grounds to prohibit you from owning, possessing, purchasing, or otherwise receiving a firearm.

I know what you’re thinking, “I’ll just check ‘NO’ on question 11.e.” Doing so when, in fact you ARE an unlawful (under federal law) user of ma*****na (cannabis) is perjury. Furthermore, if the licensee knows that you’ve lied on the form, said licensee is required to refuse the transfer and report the situation to the ATF. “But how would a licensee know I lied?” If you make overt or discreet statements causing the licensee to doubt the veracity of your answer, or you smell of cannabis while completing the form, or you have a medical ma*****na license, you are a prohibited transferee.
